A 32-YEAR-OLD woman of Chingola has been sentenced to three months imprisonment with hard labour for stealing 10 sachets of Strepsils lozenges and 11 bottles of Nivea lotion worth KR539 from Shoprite in Chingola.
This is in a case in which Elizabeth Mukosha is charged with theft, contrary to Section 265 of the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.
Particulars of the offence are that Mukosha on April 5, 2013 in Chingola did steal 10 sachets of Strepsils lozenges and 11 bottles of Nivea lotion worth KR539, the property of Shoprite.
Passing the sentence, Chingola Magistrate Ngandwe Kambafwile said it is regrettable that shoplifting has become rampant in Chingola and the courts have a duty to mete out appropriate sentences to deter would-be offenders.
“Upon your own admission of guilt, I sentence you to three months imprisonment with hard labour, ” Ms Kambafwile said.
In mitigation, Mukosha pleaded with the court to exercise maximum leniency on her because she is a first offender who did not waste the court’s time by readily pleading guilty.
Facts before the court are that on the fateful day Mukosha picked up the items from a shelf in Shoprite and packed them in her handbag.
She then attempted to leave without paying for the lozenges and lotion but security personnel spotted her and requested to search her handbag.
The court heard that the items were found in her handbag and the matter was reported to the police.
And in another case before the same court, a 20-year-old garden boy of Chingola has been sentenced to six months imprisonment with hard labour for stealing a steal pole valued at KR80.
This is in a case in which Davis Musonda is charged with theft by servant, contrary to Section 272 and 278 of the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.
Particulars of the offence are that Musonda on March 19, 2013 in Chingola, working as a servant for Prudence Kaponda, did steal a steal pole from her backyard.
Passing the sentence, Ms Kambafwile said Musonda had no right to deprive Ms Kaponda of her property.
“I sentence you to three months imprisonment with hard labour from the day you were arrested and you are free to appeal to the High court,” she said.

Tumfweko, can we have the names of the journos that make this postings, or is it Tumfweko as the bloggers? I make this appeal due to the many mistakes that we have to put up with trying to decipher what the writer is trying to say. Take for example the latter part of this article, “Particulars of the offence are that Musonda on March 19, 2013 in Chingola, working as a servant for Prudence Kaponda, did steal a steal pole from her backyard”. How does someone STEAL a STEAL pole? Common sense should tell the writer or editor that something is not right with that sentence. I believe what was stolen was a STEEL pole. Check what you put up on your blog, PLEASE.
