LAFARGE K290 Billion Profit VS Workers Conditions
Dear Editor,
Once again we are here asking for your favor to publish our letter. the only platform that helps us send information to the relevant authorities.
Below is the letter we are asking you to publish for us:
WITH K290 BILLION PROFIT, LAFARGE WORKERS CONDITIONS REMAINS POOR
Our company Lafarge Cement has upto now still not shown any signs of improving our conditions of service, despite our pleading for intervention of the Ministry of Labor.
Management says the company has no money to pay us well even after makin over 290 Billion kwacha profit through our had work and suffering. This company has a very small number of employees, less than 900 for both lusaka and ndola plant. They say the company has no money to pay us well but how do they manage to pay such huge amounts of money in rentals for some foreign managers?
This is how they abuse our money:
1. 68568- RENTALS FOR CHRIS HEUGAS ( FROM JUNE 2012 – MAY 2013) – USD 270,810
2. 65378- RENTALS FOR CHRISSIE MOLOSENI(NOV – DEC 2012) – USD 50,796
3. 71848- RENTALS FOR DEPORTED MD FOLA ESAN(JAN- JUNE 2013 ) – USD 190,800
4. 71739- RENTALS FOR D FRASER, AMAN DOING NOTHING(JAN- DEC 2013)-USD- 30,000
5. 72807- RENTALS FOR ONE PHOEBBY MUSONDA(JAN- DEC 2013) – USD 26,461
6. 71528- RENTALS FOR TSHEPISO DUMASI (JAN TO DEC 2013) – USD 36,000.
THIS IS TO MENTION BUT A FEW, See the money we are paying in rentals for just 5 foreigners besides their huge salaries and allowances? Why is it like this? How do you pay 1.5billion kwacha rent per year for one person? isnt this madness. these people have money to pay us well. ZAMBEZI PORTLAND IS EVEN PAYING FAR MUCH BETTER THAN LAFARGE CEMENT AT THE MOMENT.
Last year they paid us K200,000 to K370,000 as salary increaments, and this year they paid us non unionised employees upto K410,000 as salary increament after making over K290 Billion profit and they are offering unionised employees a 5% increament (about 130 – 150KR) though they are still fighting for a better amount but the company insists they have no money. If they have no money, why waste such huge sums of money on rentals as indicated above, even still paying for a directors mansion who was deported months ago and no one is staying in the same mansion(isnt it same as getting this money and throwing it in the river or burning it?). Why waste money in that manner? Are we there slaves? Why should cost saving only be exercised on us? Production bonusess are also poorly calculated, always benefiting those with bigger salaries.
We appeal to our Govnment to investigate why mangement has continued paying huge rentals for the Deported MDs mansion, what activities are they using that house for, TERRORISM? Perhaps a scan of devices that are in that house can be a good idea. Why do these current crop of foreigners refuse to occupy beautiful company houses?
The Govnment must also intervene in the matter where management has blocked us from joining the union saying the company policy does not allow…..is the LABOR MINISTRY SLEEPING? Doesnt the zambian Labor law state that employees are fre to join any union?
Lastly Govnment must also interven on our pension scheme saga, managemnt is stealing our pension money.

Has this continued, surely mr president should look into the injustice at lafarge. They spend big money for foreigners and yet the people on the ground level are making those billions. This world is so unfair but thumbs up employees for writing because you never know who is reading!

This is daylight robbery. These people are robbing food from your mouths and its unfair.Without the simple employee who is using all his or her energy, where will those billions come from and knowing zambians in higher positions they never talk for fellow zambians suffering.Greed in the highest level!

This company was sold by the Zambian people because they thought their lives will be better off without it.
It has turned out to be a nightmare. If you cant accept the salary leave. See if you will be able to find another job out there.
It will be unfair for government to intervene in this matter because Lafarge is not breaking any labour laws.My advise; thank GOD you even have something to call a job.

If this is true there is no reason why government should not intervene. This is slavery in the day light. It is not a living wage. It is not even enough for transport to take me to my village in miyombe. The labour minister must come in. The so called union leaders seem not to be doing anything. I even wander what they discuss when they meet management.

I am sorry for you who feel government should intervene, but in what capacity will they intervene? For as long as lafarge pays minimum wages and all other labour laws are followed there is no basis on it to intervene! Who is to say what is and isn’t fair? Salary increments are made to keep salaries inline with inflation, which has been between 6-8%, so if kr250 increment is 8% of your salary is that unfair?? Are you yourselves being fair to yourselves comparing yourselves to management? I’m sorry if this sounds harsh but complaining on online forums like this one will do you no good. Let’s learn to be realistic

What are these guys complaning about? They are among the highest paid employees in Chilanga. Those with friends in Chilanga should call to find out if this letter is justified.
I’m sure their general workers are around 1.5m or more. If i’m mistaken let them give us the figures.
