The opposition Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) has welcomed the decision by the Patriotic Front (PF) government to reject the request by the Technical Committee Drafting the Country’s Constitution for an extra six months extension in which to complete its work.
The Technical committee’s request for extension of its timeframe to December 31st this year would have implied the provision of a supplementary budget amounting to forty four million kwacha rebased.
Director of Communication in the Office of the MMD president, Muhabi Lungu has told QFM News that government’s decision to compel the Technical Committee to stick to the June 30th deadline is justified as there is no need to prolong the constitutional making process.
Mr. Lungu who was part of the recently held national constitution conference further notes that recommendation and amendments that were made to the first Draft that the Technical Committee presented were not extensive for it to prolong its work.
He has since advised the Technical Committee to hire more draft persons if having few draft persons is the reason why it wanted to have the deadline moved to December.
