FIFA Still Investigating Kasengele Over Match-Fixing, Confirms Yobe Brothers Ban Elapse

FIFA, the world governing body, says it is still investigating last year’s improper registration of Zambian players banned for match fixing in Finland but featured in the local league before their ban elapsed.

George Kasengele, the FAZ general secretary, is at the centre of the investigations after he allegedly cleared the players that include the Yobe brothers, Donwell and Dominic.

Other players that Kasengele allegedly cleared are Francis Kombe and Nchimunya Mweetwa, among others. FIFA say the players were not eligible to feature in the local league but wondered how they were cleared and played a few games.

However, the body has declined to give further details on the investigation to avoid jeopardising the case.

“Investigations [in the Kasengele case] are still on-going. Therefore we cannot comment for the time-being,” said a member of the FIFA media department early this week.

The body has, however, confirmed that those players banned in Finland were now eligible to feature for their clubs because the ban elapsed in April 2013.

“Please note firstly that the decisions of FIFA extending the sanctions worldwide are based on the contents of the decisions passed by the Finland FA.

“In this context, be informed that the sanctions imposed by the Finland FA, and subsequently extended by the Chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, elapsed in April 2013,” FIFA has stated.

Therefore, those players caught up in the incident can now feature for their respective clubs which they joined upon returning to Zambia. Dominic, a formidable midfielder, had been signed on by 2012 champions Zanaco while his older brother Donwell was playing for National Assembly before the ban was extended worldwide.

Striker Francis Kombe had briefly played for Power but was later signed on by Napsa Stars as well as Nchimunya Mweewta.
