Withdraw Duty-Free Alcohol As Well, SATA Told

Dear Editor,

Please allow me space in your column of letters to pass comment on the ignored important issue relating to subsidies.
Following the removal of fuel and maize subsidies, I have strongly realised that one more important subsidy is still remaining to be removed which is sheer waste of tax payers’ money much needed to improve the lives of ordinary poor people in the country.
There is need to urgently take appropriate action on the duty-free alcohol which is enjoyed by our men and women in uniform.
The country needs the savings that would be realised from the duty-free on alcohol so that it is channelled to other developmental activities for the benefits of Zambians.

Ever heard of apple ciders? Very sweet & mellow!!

Apple max and Fanta are ‘zigolo’ drinks made of water sugar and artificial flavors and coloring.

How many soldiers are in Zambia? People like the author have no appreciation for the men and women in uniform, these spends weeks and months in our jungles defending our borders and most of them are rotated without proper accommodations in their camps. Why deny a patriot who has sacrificed so much in the bush a cheap beer? Subsidised beers are found only in the established camps not in patrol camps. The savings from subsidies from soldiers drinks is nothing compared to subsidies in higher education, health or in production of maize. Mr Kauta, the most important ignored subsidy is on ARV’s which are very expensive! We have almost 600,000 people in Zambia taking ARV’s which cost $100 per day for a dose and these are subsidised 100% – people do not pay anything. Life is precious, you can never put a value on life that’s why some subsidies are better left in the hands of govt like ARV’s subsidy not briefcase con-men like the maize saga.

Subsidizing Alcohol will not only increase household poverty but also lead to destitution among families. If any of us has some little knowledge of Economic and the theory of ‘Substitution’ am sure no one in their sane mind would advocate for removal of subsidies on Alcohol. It can only take a sharp mind to clearly understand this.
