“The revelations by an independent verifier on selected Zambeef meat products containing aromatic aldehydes is distasteful and a mockery to consumer’s rights” said CUTS a leading policy research and advocacy group in a statement released here today.
Government had in the recent months tested meat samples taken from different batches and outlets of Zambeef which confirmed the presence of the foreign matter. Aromatic aldehydes are normally used as a preservative including embalming of corpses. Further independent laboratory analysis undertaken in South Africa has confirmed the presence of aldehydes used in embalming of corpses a development which was confirmed by the Minister of Health, Dr Joseph Kasonde in the Parliament yesterday.
In view of this development, Government needs to whip the company regardless of its contribution and standing in the Zambian economy. All existing legal statutes which have been breached by this action ought to be considered and the fine should serve as a deterrent to those adopting similar practices and would be offenders.
“Right to be provided with safe products and services remain an inalienable element of human rights. By selling any products containing contaminated stuff is likely to harm citizen-consumers” said CUTS.
Further, taking advantage of the ignorance of consumers on their rights and responsibilities and subjecting them to harmful products or services that have a health risk remains an unpardonable act. There is need to strengthen regulations on labeling and divulging of full information on products and services in Zambia. Some of the authorities tasked with the responsibility to protect consumers’ interest need to wake-up from slumber and provide the much needed regulatory oversight. Consumer protection needs a collective action. We can’t have a situation where only a few doted regulators show devotion towards this quest while others ignore their responsibility.

No wonder the president says HH thinks like an under 5 child. His interest and criticism are not to protect Zambians but to protect the interests of the multinational corporation – Zambeef because HH is purely a businessman and not a leader fit to rule this country.

If one can remember, BP in America was heavily charged over oil spillage in the pacific ocean. This happened because BP as a company, abrogated its safety measures and during that time a lot of equatic animals perished along the western coast of United States. Zambeef shouldgo through the same fate. To make the matters worse these Zambeef pipo are defending the indefensible. Govt should make sure these pipo pay the price. BP was charged if not mistaken something like $10,000,000,000 or more.

Ala abantu bambi fipunsha sana. SO now that we know the truth, ZAMBEEF should build a small Cancer clinic in each Province, and 2 huge ones in Southern and Western Province.
Then since we want to host the Africa Cup in 2019 or 2017, they should also pay for the Livingstone and Mongu Stadiums.
Ba ZAMBEEF ngamwakana we are closing your mortuaries(imwe amuti ama abattoirs next week).

1. It is sad for Zambeef to be going through this and experiences the unplanned impact of loss of revenue as their beef sales books thin out and the ensuing possibility of serious legal action that may result in closure of the company and possible deportation of its non resident directors. Such is how justice works….sanctions have to be metted out and collateral damage is expected to be experienced as innocent people will lose jobs and zambeef suppliers will lose business. Govt will also lose revenye from the process. That is how it should be.
2.As we wait for govt action let us be level headed and ensure that the rights of citizens are protected regardless of how many jobs the company provided or how much revenues govt accrued from zambeef.
3.Let the adjudicators also ensure that the Zambeef saga is used as a test so that no other entity should tamper with food products in Zambia.
4.Meanwhile bravo to the galant Zambeef employee who is believed to have squealed. In fact it is he who deserves the Award not the Zambeef MD
