Nsobe camp on the Copperbelt has been closed following the drowning of two Copperbelt University students.
Speaking at the burial site,Copperbelt province Minister Mwenya Musenge says the camp will only re-open after experts from the Ministry of works and supply ascertain the safety of the dam.
Brindley Mpashi and Francis Mulenga Bwalya drowned in the dam on Saturday when their canoe capsized.

What a silly decision by a dull minister. Why waste time and money for ‘experts’ to determine the safety of the dam?
Simply make it mandatory to have lifeguards on standby and stop drunks from having anything to do with the water!
So says this “expert”.

@Expert batty rider killer, have you ever heard of tides, waves, quick sand, reeds, getting stuck in the reeds, water temperature, crocodile, hippos .e.t.c.It is not only water that can cause a risk to revelers and also other marine animals, flora and fauna. So Mr.expert you have absolutely limited your research. In fact some people are even allergic to ground water. You could die even in a life jacket.

Mr Bobo, you must be the expert the minister has invited to conduct the safety standards at the camp so you will do anything to eat the allowances while doing your investigations!
Havent you heard that the place was closed due to drowning of students????? In a dam at the camp????? so what are all the other factors you have mentioned have to do with this incident??? Tides and waves in a dam really?
Gimme a break!!!!!

It does not make economic or logical sense to close a business site because 2 persons died. There must have been considerations such as:
1. For how long has the camp been in existence and how many such fatalities have occurred there?
2. How are the safety standards?
3. What led to the drowining of the students, was it self negligence, an accident or poor safety standards by Nsobe Management?
Once these questions are answered, then the next step can be taken, otherwise it will be like closing the Great East Road because there was a terrible road accident.
I submit.

It seems another waste of time. Hope ‘experts’ wont be on the tax payers budget. How many people have gone to Nsobe and have come back alive? Hope u are equally using your experts to reduce RTA’s

You’ve failed to close Zambeef but you want to close Nsobe. Leave our camp site alone.
Why didn’t they close Gommes when someone drowned some 10 years ago?
Be wise Musenge.

Based on the drowning only as a std for decision, one asks, why Great East, North rds etc are still open?
And mines and rivers and fisheries….
A bit more technical and logicalapproach would save us better.

The decision to close the camp by the minister is uninformed and just emotional. Fact is observance of safety begins with oneself before venturing into any sort of adventure. On water be it conoeing, boating, rafting you name it, there are preconditions to be met before venturing out even on cruises such as offered by lodges in Siavonga. This is the responsibility of our maritime agency to ensure safety and adherence of rules. It is a pity that students drowned but if they had imbibed alcohol before getting on the boat and were not armed with life jackets they were equally responsible to their fate! I am sure the Police Marine Section can help train lifeguards to serve in places where there is water sport and even for swimming pools! How many of us have gone to swimming pools and found a life guard on standby? The minister need not waste hard to come by resources with an investigation when we all know it is a lapse on observance of safety. The responsible agency has to make sure safety standards are being observed on all water craft and any sport so long it involves a water body.

Please live Nsobe to operate. Did you close the Lodge in Siavonga where a customs officer and girlfriend drowned in a swimming pool after boozing! How many rivers are you going to close?
