Ndola Man Jailed For Stealing Car Exhaust

THE Ndola Magistrateís Court has sentenced a man of Masala in Ndola to one year imprisonment with hard labour for stealing a car exhaust manifold worth K500.
Magistrate Joan Tamba on Tuesday jailed Joseph Mwanza, 29, of house number 2531 after he pleaded guilty to theft.
“A custodial sentence is befitting for this case because the accused has not shown any remorse” Ms Tamba said.
Particulars of the offence are that Mwanza on August 22, 2013 in Ndola, stole an exhaust manifold for a Toyota Corolla worth K500, the property of Joseph Chanda.
In mitigation, Mwanza pleaded for leniency and told the court that he did not know what he was doing when he stole the exhaust manifold.
Facts before the court were that on the material day around 11:00 hours, Mr Chanda was at his flat in Itawa when he heard a woman shouting for help outside.
The court heard that when Mr Chanda rushed out, he found his neighbour Hilda Mwanza shouting that a thief had been apprehended by residents after he was caught red-handed stealing the exhaust manifold.
Mr Chanda identified the exhaust manifold as his and Mwanza was taken to Itawa Police Post where he was interviewed.
Mwanza admitted the charge under warn-and-caution and was detained awaiting court appearance.
