SPORTS Minister Chishimba Kambwili has directed that two bank accounts be opened for newly crowned African Boxing Union (ABU) female bantamweight champion, Catherine Phiri to go towards buying her a house and enhancing her education.
Kambwili also donated K5,000 towards Catherine’s education and ordered for the opening of two bank accounts for her as a way of appreciating her achievements.
The minister directed Permanent Secretary, Agness Musunga to open one account for members of the public and another one for corporate entities to deposit money to help support the new female boxing kid on the block.
He was speaking during a Press briefing at his office in Lusaka yesterday saying, this was one way of encouraging Catherine to work harder towards attaining her education.
Catherine on Saturday hammered Ugandan, Toma Hawa Babirye to pulp to lift her inaugural ABU bantamweight title.
Kambwili said it would only be wise that the first account be opened to buy Catherine a befitting house, a precedent that was set by late Republican president, Levy Mwanawasa when he purchased a house for the now retired female boxing icon, Esther Phiri (no relation to Catherine).
“This is a precedent that was set by the late President Mwanawasa as a way of encouraging female boxers to work hard and I feel it is something that has to be carried on so that our female boxers can feel encouraged,” he said.
The Minster said the second account would be used to raise money for supporting Catherine’s training camp in Las Vegas in the United States of America (USA).
Kambwili said his ministry had picked on Las Vegas because the place was renowned for having the best boxers in the world, adding that it is where the finest trainers in the world were found; hence the ideal place for Catherine to go and perfect her skill.
He could not however, disclose how much would be needed for the second account, saying he was yet to meet the planners on how much would be needed for the programme.
Kambwili said the two accounts would run for two months after which Government would come in to meet whatever shortfall would remain and then spend the money for the intended purposes.
He said Government would top up the balance of the monies to be realised from the limited available resources in its overstretched expenditures; hence the encouragement to the general public and the corporate world to work together in supporting Catherine to continue raising Zambia’s female boxing profile.
The pronouncement came as part of the congratulatory massage to Catherine for winning last Saturday’s fight against Babirye who she managed to overcome in eight rounds to claim the African bantamweight title.
Kambwili has since urged Catherine to remain focused, disciplined and to continue working hard at school if she were to attain her dreams in life.
And commenting on the K5,000 donation to Catherine for school which he said came from his own pocket, Kambwili said Government would not hesitate to give Catherine a scholarship to help further her education when need arises.
Catherine who was at a loss for words thanked Government for the support.
Meanwhile, Kambwili has said there was no special programme lined up for ABU champion Charles Manyuchi since there was no precedent set for male boxers in Zambia, but congratulated him for his achievement and wished him well in his endeavours.

A govt that does not segregates any sport discipline. All those which were not receiving the attention from the govt, now are enjoying the fruits of being a Zambian.

Kambwili, that’s great. I have wondering all along why PF could not honour cathy for her achievements the way mwanawasa’s and RB’s MMD honoured the female boxer esther phiri. Anyway, finally it has happened. Thats the way to do things, not always looking at regional politics before doing good for a deserving individual.
Hat’s off to Kambwili.

This is a good gesture and i hope he wont do a willi nsanda. Boxers shud also be appreciate just like footballers when they perform. A house and education sponsorship is good reasoning other than exposing her to cash.

A Willy Nsanda is to support a boxing girl in ones official capacity and later in the night ask her to undo her body linen so one can push his miniature third leg between hers. And by sunsrise you learn she has retired from boxing..
