Zesco Delay Nkana Coronation
Nkana’s coronation as 2013 champions was delayed after Zesco United held them to a 1-1 draw in Kitwe today.
A win for leaders Nkana today would have ended second placed Zesco’s interest in the title race had Nkana picked up an unassailable 57 points.
Meanwhile, Nkana won a last minute reprieve to have fans attend Saturday’s game thanks to a last minute injunction against playing their home games behind closed doors as penalty for their part during the October 27 abandoned game away to Konkola Blades.
However, it was Zesco who took the lead today in the 8th minute after Winston Kalengo headed in a Kangwa Chileshe corner.
Zesco’s goal came seven minutes after referee Bernard Chabala erased Nkana striker Festus Mbewe goal after he handled the ball before shooting it past Zesco goalkeeper Lameck Nyangu.
A swath of silence cut across the stadium after the goal as Zesco stamped their authority on the game.
Respite for Nkana came in the 26th minute when they won a penalty after defender Nyambe Mulenga had brought down Mbewe.
Striker Reynold Kampamba stepped up to convert the spot kick to score his 15 goal of the season, equaling his tally for the 2012 when he won the golden boot.
Kampamba had another chance to extend his tally in the 81st minute and to seal the three points they needed to secure the title but was denied by Nyangu who made a dramatic on –the-line save to ensure Zesco kept their slender title hopes alive.
