Lightning Kills Pregnant Woman In Luapula

By MUBANGA NONDO
A 22-YEAR-OLD pregnant woman of Kasuba village in Mansa in Luapula Province died instantly on Saturday after being struck by lightning.
Luapula Province commissioner of police Malcom Mulenga confirmed from Mansa yesterday that the incident happened around 17:30 hours while the woman was visiting her parents-in-law.
Mr Mulenga identified the deceased as Given Sakala.
He, however, said police discovered that Ms Sakala’s body had no injuries after a physical inspection.
Mr Mulenga said Ms Sakala’s body is lying in the Mansa General Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem and burial.
And police in Chienge have launched a manhunt for a 32-year-old soldier of Chipungu border post in Chienge for allegedly assaulting a 21-year-old fisherman of Chief Puta’s area using the butt of a gun.
Mr Mulenga named the suspect as Staff Sergeant Chali Musonda while the victim has been identified as Francis Kawelwa.
He said the incident happened on Thursday last week around 20:00 hours when Musonda was called to resolve a dispute between Kawelwa and other fishermen.
“We have opened a docket against Musonda, a soldier of Chipungu border, who allegedly assaulted Mr Kawelwa. It is alleged that some fishermen had a dispute over the casting of fishing nets and as a result, a quarrel erupted as the other group did not want their friends to pass where they had already cast their fishing nets,” Mr Mulenga said.
He said Musonda allegedly assaulted Mr Kawelwa, who sustained a deep cut on the head.
