Magande Justifies KCM’s Job Losses

Magande
Former Finance Minister Ng’andu Magande has charged that Zambia is not economically positioned to start issuing threats to mining companies to revoke mining licenses due to job cuts.
Commenting on threats by President Michael Sata to revoke Konkola Copper Mines’s operating license following the company’s decision to lay off 1,500 workers due to advanced mechanization of operations, Mr. Magande warned that such threats have the potential to destabilise other mining companies and investors.
In an interview with Hot FM News, Mr. Magande has advised President Michael Sata to allow technocrats to handle the KCM matter.
Meanwhile, Mr. Magande has justified the reasons KCM has given to lay off the 1,500 workers.
He explained that the advanced mechanization at the mining firm is one way of trying to lower the cost of doing business as well as adapting to the modern way of mining operations.

I was thinking Mangande was presidential material. Im very disappointed at his baseless utterances. I thought he had his head on top of his shoulders and that he could it, I got it wrong. As a president the citizens take priority. You need to protect and defend them especially when their jobs are at stake. What the president did was for the best of all of us. If it fails well and good at least he tried. No wonder we were losing jobs like rats in MMD time and the government was just quite.
Buchi
November 6, 2013 at 4:07 pm
These jobs about to be lost were created by the MMD. Threats will not create jobs. ZCCM went down because when it was time to mnimize cost, we did not do anything for fear that we may lose votes, as a result the whole thing went down and all jobs lost. This may happen at KCM. Not only 1529 will be lost, but everything.

So its true when people say Bembas have very small brains to comprehend matters of such magnitude. KCM is running business here. Let me give you an example Mr. Monkey eater. If you used to employ 20 casual workers to cultivate your field the day you acquire a tractor you won’t need all those workers. Instead, you will replace them with one skilled employee called tractor driver.

That is exactly pipo were saying about Zamtel govt has no capacity to run Zamtel, to day Zamtel is one of the competitors in the market and doing very fine rather than being sold for a song to LAP GREEN.

The former government made a terrible mistake to give such a big mine like KCM to the Indians. Leave the shops to the Indians and the mines to Americans or Australian investors. Look at what Indians did to Luanshya Mine. The company was bussy selling copper and yet its employees went for years without pay and the president then was not bored enough to stop the nonsense until the whole thing collapsed. I still support Sata on this one its either they tell us they cannot run the mine or they continue and maintain the workers. KCM operates in Chingola, Chililabombwe, Kitwe and Konkola and if it goes down the whole copperbelt will go down with it.We cannot afford that now.

November 6, 2013 at 10:00 am
Thats the problem when you mix politics with business, in a capitalist model. Magande’s explanation is simple enough even for laymen to comprehend. As it stands, on average, one KCM worker on contributes 8 tonnes of copper produced annually. This is, way below the industry average, and regardless how profitable, the mines are operating at present( which they are), a company, that is answerable to shareholders, strive for maximum returns, and continous improvement in operations. modern mining techniques call for automation, rather than labor intesive production….so get on the with the times….Instead of making noise, those retrenched should go back to school, and adopt….
Andrew Chibuye
November 6, 2013 at 10:08 am
Its only that our KCM is being managed by wrong people. Indians are not good at mining other than shop managers. If give to the rite people, this issue might have not been the case. The best way is to let these guys leave the mines soon as possible so that those coming can maintain the workers and not the 3 years process i heard. They can go ahead with laying off the 1, 500 workers, but the first culprits must be Indians who have come to take up Zambian jobs.South Africa, at one gave priorities to South Africans.

@wiseman, name one investor who is willing to take up a mine with a life expectancy of less than 5 years, and all risks involved from governments inconsitencies on mining policy to, flactuating and uncertain international commodity prices? do not be fooled, there aint that many mining companies in the world…i can count them on one hand…. the major mining houses….and trust me, most will never invest their hard earned money, in a country where the govt is yet to make up their minds…are they capitalists or “comrades” , like my good friend Miles Sampa, is fond of saying nowadays!!!

THERE IS NO ANY MECHANISED MINING THAT KCM IS DOING & NEITHER HAVE THEY BOUGHT ANY EQUIPMENT FOR MECHANISED MINING.

Mechanised Mining? Where? not at Nchanga. It is puerly converntional mining, meaning it is man labour intensified. What these Indians are aiming at is to reduce KCM labour and then concentrate on casuals so that they reduce on wage bills, leave days bills, hospital costs, bonuses if any, pension contributions and other costs directly with KCM labour. Not the other crap they are feeding the nation. Iddiotts.

Magande is a credible man. Ive come to give this man a lot of respect when it comes to issues of Finance. Ofcourse I am not happy with KCM’s intentions of laying of 1,500 workers at a go. In this instance I agree with Andrew Chibuye when he said if it has to lay off workers for the sake of making profit, then let them start with the Indians and southafricans and all other foreigners before it touches a Zambian. I think this is a fair game.

Zambia is in this state because of people like Magande! How do you expect a country to develop when you are not in control of your natural resources? Magande, always tried to please these foreign investor at the expense of the country by offering them tax free incentives which went beyond the norms of how other countries were offering.Zambia has not seen the benefits of the boom in the mining sector because of poor policies and agreements he signed with mining houses.Zambians are crying about electricity bills, while we offer the mines low tariffs and tax free incentives and they apply price transfers on finished products so that they pay little tax. KCM is changing excuses every few months because they have no direction, they reduce the number of Indians in the company! Zambian jobs first!

I ve wrked in the mines for 10 solid years nd i know all about mining.magande is ignorant about the happenings at kcm.there has never been a retrenchment of a thousand plus in the history of mining in zambia.mechanised mining does not mean replacing 1500 employees.we ve been doing mechanised mining at 3 shaft nd what we have seen id is that kcm bought cheap machinery which broke down prematurely. instead of replacing it, kcm has failed due to the fact that kcm has a lot of debts to many suppliers.the other thing is that kcm spent money on wrong projects like 4 shaft nf and the back fill plant which have not contributed to production . In short, vedantta has lamentably failed to run kcm.vendantta is running kcm on bollowed funds coz the huge debts.magande nf and all those supporting retrenchment should visit the open pits nd see how much activity is there.kcm has incurred huge debts coz the indians do not pay contractors nd suppliers.

Mr Magande, Go to the open pit or the recently closed East mill crusher at Nchanga Mine then you can open that wide unbrushed mouth of yours with dropping Saliva before before you talk,
I have worked with Mr Temba for many years and the life span of this open pit was never mentioned because Anglo was running it,
I am based in Mali and left these indians making billions of profits on our copper and cobalt and failing to buy equipment even a pump for a Honda Ba fikala,
So for one Mr Magande to open his large mouth as though he has ever worked at 27/20 level or has ever stayed muma SQ,really makes me wonder how it feels ukulalalila Kampompo,
You see Mr Magande, visit the miners at KCM,#3 shaft in Chililabombwe and see for yourself then you will support the idea that these Indians should go,
Anglo is just in South Africa and is waiting to come back, does it click in you that Lubambe mine or konnocco, Kansanshi or Lumwana run by whites are never concerned or make noise with Government as much as kcm?
But an indian that does not use toilet paper when shiting is the one you want to give a big mine like KCM to run, see how how beautiful ladies at corporate offices have darkened because of no make up due to poor salaries, Niwe ukabopa?
