How the Bursaries Committee ‘Swindles’ Students

Dear Editor,

Allow me to inform the nation on how the Bursaries Committee ‘make their money’ from the students’ allowances. University students ( UNZA and CBU) on GRZ sponsorship are entitled to meal, book, project and accomodation allowances. This money is deposited into the Committee’s account and the committee is then supposed to deposit into the students’ account.

But the Bursaries Committe always finds a way to benefit from the students’ money. They don’t pay students on time, they let the money mature and gain interest and get the interest. This is especially true for The School of Medicine at Ridgeway Campus. There is always delay in paying students project and accomodation allowances.

But why Ridgeway Campus? The answer is very simple: Ridgeway is a very small campus with very few people, they dont demonstrate as does main campus and are too busy with their studies. The bursaries committee always say they are processing lists, this and that. If main campus demonstrate today, they will be paid by end of the following day.

One can only wonder how the committee manages to ‘process’ the list for thousands of students within 24hrs but take weeks and weeks to process for only few students at RW campus. Right now there are students doing their fieldwork in areas such as Maamba, Itezhi-tezhi, Mumbwa and Siavonga to mention but a few. These students have not received their project allowance which was supposed to have been paid over a month ago.

The big question is; where is the interest that this money has earned going to? Someone to look into this rot at bursaries committe ASAP!

Concerned student.

I doubt if this is true. GRZ usually runs current accounts that do not accrued interest

Okey,… Now we know that only students at Rideway campus are serious with their studies, so why do the rest need these allowances?

Another way is to inflate the declared list of the number of students enrolled in collaboration with university authorities. Lecturers who maintain the actual lists of students in each class are not consulted when processing final lists of students on bursary. Chances of having ghost students then become high.
