A TRAFFIC Police officer in Solwezi has died in a car chase that turned tragic yesterday.
The officer identified as Colby Shamalenge, 28, was with two others when they chased after a passenger bus they suspected to have been defective.
Mr Shamalenge died on the spot after the car they had hijacked and used to pursue a Jitotwe passenger coach overturned.
The incident happened at Kimitote area along the Solwezi-Mutanda Road around 09.30 hours yesterday.
The other officers in the same vehicle sustained injuries and were admitted to Solwezi General Hospital.
North-Western Province Deputy Police chief Michael Nkaka confirmed the accident and said Mr Shamalenge was a constable in the traffic section.
He identified the other two as Emmanuel Pelekelo, 24, and Henry Zulu, aged 25, both constables in the traffic section at Kyawama Police Station.
Mr Nkaka said the body of the deceased was in Solwezi General Hospital mortuary, while investigations had been launched.
Some eye witnesses said one of the three Police officers controlling traffic at Food 24 Restaurant approached a taxi driver and gave him money to go and buy him talk time and food.
The Police officer was said to have kept the keys of the taxi, a Toyota Vintage, registration ADC 2555.
The eye witnesses said soon after the taxi driver left, the three Police officers jumped into the car left in their custody and pursued the passenger coach which they suspected to have defects.
They said the speeding car was trying to overtake the bus when it lost control and rammed into a drainage before it overturned.-ZANIS.

This is what happens when you take the Law in your own hands.Let other police officers learn that the love of money is the root of all evil.
Let the surviving officers be forced to get loans and buy the car for the taxi driver and remove them from traffic sector and send them to the police reception.

these officers according to their ages they seem to me like they have served less than five yrs . that means they were still very excited to a level of even stealing a car to pursue “money” they saw in the coach. I thought chasing of motorists with private cars is now ilegal, someone answer me. RTSA let the chase remain yours.

@Misheck, your faith in Satanism is strange. Those Police Officers simply overstepped their limits, and apparently they could even be un experienced at driving, let alone chase driving. Highway code says ‘Know your motor vehicle well and understand its limits’. They didn’t. The i-d-i-o-ts just made another entry in ’1000 ways to die.’

Its woke up call to all cops that take the law in their hands. Let the two surviving cops pay for the damaged car and the dead cops benefits be deducted too to pay for the same.
Meanwhile fire the Cops for as an example to those that would be offender cops.

There’s nothing to be sorry for. You rip what you saw. Good for that foolish police man who died. His death was justified. In fact fak him. This should be a learning lession for rest of them so-called law enforcement officers and bagas. The motive was wrong from the onset. I wish them corrupt officers die in one or more of the same situation. Foolish police!!!!
