Zambia Climbs On FIFA Ranking

By STEPHEN PHIRI
THE Zambia national soccer team has climbed by three rungs on the FIFA/Coca-Cola world rankings.
The Chipolopolo who were 72nd last month, has moved to 69th but has maintained the 15th position in Africa.
The rankings released in Zurich yesterday saw Zambia accrue 523 points while leaders Spain has 1507 points.
Zambia’s rise is attributed to the third place finish at the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) Senior Challenge Cup, which was won by hosts Kenya.
At the tournament in Kenya, Zambia drew 1-1 with Tanzania, beat Burundi 1-0 and thumped Somalia 4-0 in group stage matches.
In the quarter-finals, the Chipolopolo edged Burundi 4-3 on penalties after a goalless draw in regulation time and lost 1-2 to Sudan in the semi-finals.
Zambia overcame Tanzania 6-5 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation time in the third-place playoff.
Ivory Coast maintain the first position in Africa, Ghana are second, Algeria are third, fourth are Nigeria, Cape Verde are fifth, sixth are Egypt.
They are followed by Mali (7), Tunisia (8), Cameroon (9) and Burkina Faso (10).
Others making the top 20 are Libya (11), Guinea (12), South Africa 13), Senegal (14), Zambia (15), Togo (160, Morocco (17), Sierra Leone (18), Gabon (19) and Democratic Republic of Congo (20).
And Spain has maintained the first position while 2014 World Cup hosts Brazil are stuck on 10th position.
Germany are second, Argentina are third, fourth are Columbia, Portugal are fifth, sixth Uruguay, Italy are seventh, eighth are Switzerland and ninth are Netherlands.
