SOCCER analyst Ponga Liwewe says the nationality of a coach does not matter but the quality of what an individual brings out.
In an interview in Lusaka on Friday, Liwewe said the fact that a coach was an expatriate did not matter but that it was a case of what an individual took to the national team at the end of the day.
He however said that a local coach for the national team was better, adding that such a coach had a clear understanding of the team’s needs.
“Obviously a local coach understands the local environment and the local mentality better while a foreign coach may bring expertise which is not necessarily available in the country,” he said.
Liwewe said most of the African countries currently doing well on the soccer scene were relying on local coaches, one of them being Nigeria who qualified to the World Cup.
Recently, Football Association of Zambia president Kalusha said that local coaches were not ready to drill the national team.
He said it should not be simple to pick a national team coach because the task was important and big and defended his stance despite local fans condemning his earlier statement.

YES PONGA, YOU’RE RIGHT THAT THE NATIONALITY OF THE COACH DOESNT MATTER. BUT IT CERTAINLY MATTERS WHERE YOUR FAZ PRESIDENT LIVES. OURS LIVES IN SOUTH AFRICA AND RUNS SOCCER IN ZAMBIA, WHICH MAKES HIS ZAMBIAN JOB A PART TIME ONE, REALLY!!!!

Ba Ponga! Surely, you aspire for a local coach, who understands local players and a local environment yet you would want to compete in international tournaments.
Correct me please, unless you meant a local coach with international exposure. Because in the case of the BIG BOSS – STEVEN KESH, he is an accomplished coach internationally ex togolese coach etc…
I expected a balanced opinion my friend.
