A miner has died in an accident at Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) in Chililabombwe.
KCM public relations and communications manager Shapi Shachinda said in a statement issued in Kitwe yesterday that the accident happened around 23:00 hours on Monday at number one shaft at KCM in Chililabombwe.
Mr Shachinda named the deceased as Kafukanya Ngosa aged 30, a drill rig operator of CMC Bomar, a contractor company engaged by KCM.
“Mr Ngosa succumbed to injuries he sustained after he was hit by a boom of a Jumbo underground, around 23:00 hours on Monday,” Mr Shachinda said.
He said operations at the scene of the accident have been suspended to pave way for internal investigations by KCM and the Mines Safety Department (MSD).
He said the next of kin have been informed about the fatality.
“Konkola Copper Mines management and staff would like to pass heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and wishes them God’s guidance during this trying moment,” Mr Shachinda said.

MHSRIEP CMC should do their part compensating family, “CORRECT” but above all the Govt should start honouring miners this year. Copper mining started in 1930s putting this country on world map before a single freedom fighter thought of what ever good wrk they hav been doing. Yet over 70% from the field of Freedom Fighters hav continued to be honoured year in year out. Others ar sports, musicians, teachers, police, politicians etc. Miners 2 have not stoped dying since then. Ba President Sata lolekesheni pa ma miners. Cino calo cakwata ama fields ayengi e.g filya fine banyinefwe balemutasha pakuba pela senior ranks umwafulana, emutima wa bu kateka.
