30 Kaoma High School Pupils Go On Maternity Leave
DOZENS of pupils have gone on maternity leave at Kaoma High School, in a district that has also recorded a staggering 61 percent class drop-out rate.
The school had 30 girls in the family way in the first term of this year compelling them to abandon school and return home.
School head-teacher Jonathan Mukenge, who confirmed the gloomy situation, said 10 pupils who had come from basic schools have proceeded on maternity shortly after starting their grade 10 classes.
This indicates that they were pregnant before joining Kaoma High.
Mr Mukenge, who made the disclosure during a consultative stakeholders’ meeting for the Kaoma District Education Board on Wednesday, said of the 30 pupils, 12 are day scholars while the other eight were boarders.
He called for the involvement of all stakeholders to curb the problem, which has become rife at the institution.
And Kaoma district recorded a 61 percent school drop-out rate for 2013, which has been attributed to poverty, long distances to schools and low staffing levels, among other factors.
Kaoma district commissioner Joster Manjolo said the provision of quality education can only be achieved through strong partnerships between the district education board (DEB) and other stakeholders.
Mr Manjolo said the involvement of stakeholders in improving education is a good initiative which will stimulate a spirit of commitment among all interested parties.
He was speaking in a speech read for him by Kaoma district AIDS coordinating advisor Jonathan Mungandi during the stakeholders’ consultative meeting.
Mr Manjolo regretted that the district still registers poor learner performance, low attendance rates and has low reading levels coupled with high drop-outs, resulting from various factors, including early pregnancies.
He urged participants to streamline the Patriotic Front’s manifesto in all government programmes and activities that they implement.
Kaoma education board secretary Sendoi Mutumba implored stakeholders to investigate the cause of the problem.
Nkeyema district education board secretary Florence Hikaumba, who was the co-convener of the meeting, urged parents to take an active role in the input and output of education for their children.
Mrs Hikaumba said parents should realise the value of education for them to see the fruits of their children having gone to school.
She also urged members of Parents and Teachers’ Associations in schools not to over-stay in their offices but instead transfer skills and innovations to other people for the purpose of continuation.

Zambians need more sex education. Men must be taught that No means No and that they can not always force themselves on vulnerable school girls and leave them pregnant with the unwanted child.

Unfortunate situation and calls for serious concern. But what is more disappointing are the responses/comments above. Do people comment simply because you have internet access. There is a lot of prejudice, unreasonable conclusions and unconstructive comments. You are not building the country not even yourselves by not helping solve the problem. I find this a habit of most people abroad. Comment to build not to have fun in writing because of access to internet

The people responsible for these pregnancies are the Zambian soldiers you took to Barotseland to kill, maim innocent people in the hope of killing their spirit to secede. You can never kill a revolution, you can only slow it down. Asks yourselves, when in history did this sort of thing happen?
Zedians are full of defilers, from the pix one can see that these are actually children but because this is western province, will see if these defilers will be investigated and convicted to 18years like my cousin Dimba.
And the person who was taking these pix…honestly..you even have the audacity to ask them to touch their bellies..you are full of s**t.

I completed my grade 12 in 1996 at this school. Even then, sex was rife but seems this has gone uncontrolled hence what we see now.
There was a great deal of poverty and lack of exposure hence most girls fell for anyone that could give them even just a simple thing that they could not get on there own. Even just an apple would suffice back then.
A good number of pupils that we were with are no more.
Education wise the school is not doing well as most former pupils are now security guards and the like.

A fifteen year old wife in Malawi is in police custody while her husband is battling for his life after she allegedly sliced off the manhood of her husband when he refused her sex.
Media reports have quoted the police spokesperson for Phalombe police, Augustus Nkwazi, as confirming the arrest of the fifteen year old wife to twenty-two year old Misheck Chinkhuku for unlawful wounding.
It is said that on April 28, the husband who also happens to be a fisherman returned from his fishing trip where he had been for three days. It was after the return that the wife who is preganant asked for sex from the man but the man turned her down claiming that he was tired.
This eventually did not go down well with the wife who took a knife while the husband was asleep and sliced off the husband’s penis. The pain of the sliced off penis made the husband and cry in agony and that alerted neighbours who came in to the aid of the man and took him to the hospital.
He is currently at Zomba Central hospital receiving medical attention while the wife Olivia Kalimbuka is in police custody.
Gender based violence has been rampant in most Malawian marriages and this has had victims from both genders but surprisingly only the female abuse has been highlighted.
