No Exam Malpractice – Education Minister

GOVERNMENT has warned teachers and pupils against engaging in examination malpractices ahead of next month’s General Certificate of Education (GCE) examinations.

Minister of Education, Science, Vocational Training and Early Education John Phiri said Government will not tolerate examination malpractices among teachers and learners in this year’s GCE examinations.
He said in an interview in Lusaka yesterday that District Education Board Secretaries should strictly safeguard strong rooms for examination materials to protect them from unscrupulous teachers and pupils who might want to tamper with them.
Dr Phiri warned that teachers and pupils who will engage in examination malpractices will be severely punished.
“I will not tolerate reports of examination malpractices. Teachers and pupils who will engage in examination malpractices will be punished severely.
“It will be unfortunate and embarrassing to see some teachers and pupils being dragged to police and courts of law for engaging in examination malpractices. This is not helping us in any way,” he said.
Dr Phiri called on teachers’ unions to put in place effective monitoring mechanisms during this year’s examinations.
He said Government is working hard to restore credibility to examinations so that the pupils can have genuine results and excel at college and university levels.
Dr Phiri said it is sad and disappointing that the country has been facing challenges of examination malpractices perpetrated by unscrupulous teachers and pupils.
He said examination malpractices have continued to threaten the quality of education in Zambia.
Dr Phiri called for strict supervision in schools to curb examination malpractices.
He said examination malpractices are compromising the quality of education in the country.
Dr Phiri said Government has come up with mechanisms to curb examination malpractices.
“We are aware that examination malpractices have been a challenge, especially in the past. Examination leakages lead to poor quality of education. The ministry will intensify monitoring in the run-up and during the forthcoming examinations, which have since been brought forward,” Dr Phiri said.

The major problem is not the teachers or pupils but the Examinations Council and your Ministry. Leakages always start there and you know it sir.
