A 48-YEAR-OLD man of Miputu in Masaiti district has allegedly been beaten to death by his wife’s relatives.
Copperbelt Province commissioner of police Joyce Kasosa said the incident occurred at the man’s house around midnight on Thursday last week.
Ms Kasosa said the man, Bowas Kongo, died at Luanshya’s Roan General Hospital on Monday.
She said Kongo’s family members had not given reasons why his wife’s relatives allegedly beat him up.
Ms Kasosa said police have not yet made arrests as they are awaiting the outcome of the postmortem to establish the cause of Kongo’s death.
“We have not yet instituted investigations into the matter as we are awaiting the postmortem results which may warrant arrests,” she said.
And police on the Copperbelt have arrested a 35-year-old man for allegedly murdering his wife.
Police deputy spokesperson Rae Hamoonga said in a statement yesterday that that the suspect has been identified as Steven Chimbala.
It is alleged that between May 4 around 17:00 hours and May 5 around 09:00 hours, when the two had a dispute after a drinking-up, Chimbala threatened to beat up his wife at home.
“Her body was later found dead the following day with a yellowish and white substance oozing from the nose and mouth,” Mr Hamoonga said.
He said the body of the deceased is lying in hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
Meanwhile, police have instituted investigations into the murder of a 66-year-old woman of Chibombo’s Chikumbi area.
Mr Hamoonga said that Maiba Nyembe reported that her mother Flaulo Lumano was beaten by unknown persons on May 5 this year and later died the following day around 17:00 hours at Mulando village in Chikumbi.
He said the suspect is currently on the run while the body of Ms Lumano is lying in Lusaka’s University Teaching Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
