Scot Confident of PF Mangango Win

By CHRISTINE CHISHA and STEVEN MVULA
VICE-President Guy Scott is confident that the Patriotic Front (PF) candidate in the forthcoming Mangango by-election will win because his party is the only one offering solutions to the problems that the electorate face.

But the MMD says it, too, is on course to winning the seat.
Dr Scott said Government has released K161,000 for the construction of a health post in Muswala ward of Mangango.
“We have been able to explain our development agenda and from the response, the people of Mangango are very enthusiatic.
“We have also received many defectors from different opposition political parties, which has given us confidence,” he said.
Dr Scott was speaking shortly after paying a courtesy call on Chief Kahare of the Nkoya people of Kaoma.
He is in Mangango to drum up support for PF candidate Lyambai Lingweshi in the August 19 parliamentary by-election.
Dr Scott said communication towers will be installed in the area while roads are earmarked for rehabilitation.
He also warned that any person found buying votes will face the law regardless of political affiliation.
And speaking at a rally in Muswala, Minister of Local Government and Housing Emmanuel Chenda urged the people of Mangango to vote for Mr Lingweshi, who is standing on an action-oriented party.
“Our President [Sata] has created nine districts in Western Province with an aim to stimulate economic development.
“We want to see the entire Zambia developed,” Mr Chenda said.
Western Province Minister Richwell Siamunene, who is also UPND Sinazongwe member of Parliament (MP), said when he was not in Government, he struggled to take development to his constituency.
“Do not make a mistake to vote for the opposition. They have nothing to offer. You should vote for the PF candidate, who has the money and a developmental agenda for this country,” he said.
And Mr Lingweshi said: “Give me a chance to serve you for the next two-and-half years and if I fail you, vote me out in 2016.”
He said no corner of Mangango in terms of development will be left out with him as the MP.
But the MMD says it is not intimated by the PF’s confidence of winning the seat.
MMD national secretary Muhabi Lungu told the Daily Mail in an interview that the MMD will “do well” in the forthcoming polls.
“We are doing all we can to ensure that our candidate wins this seat,” Mr Lungu said.
He said the MMD is doing its best to convince the electorate to vote for its candidate.
Mr Lungu said the MMD is not worried about the massive development projects the PF is taking to areas allegedly because of the polls.
Efforts to get a comment from the UPND proved futile as party president Hakainde Hichilema was said to be in a meeting when he was called.
Party spokesperson Charles Kakoma, his deputy Cornelius Mweetwa and deputy secretary general Kachunga Simusamba did not answer their phones on over 10 attempts.
Six candidates will contest the by-election. They include Alliance for Development and Democracy (ADD)’s Mweene Naluwa, UNIP’s Janet Chingumbe, MMD’s Charles Mwenzala, United Party for National development (UPND)’s Godwin Putu and Fourth Revolution Party’s Mukumbuta Kabuyana.
The Mangango seat fell vacant following the Supreme Court nullification of area MP Robert Taundi Chiseke’s election on grounds of electoral malpractice.

It is a win-win situation. If UPND loses you will claim that the elections were rigged and if you win you will say “I told you so”.
