Chitimukulu: All Is Well

THE coronation of Henry Sosala as the 38th Chitimukulu of the Bemba people at Ku Mwende Ng’ombe grounds in Malole was steeped in tradition and Catholicism, an indication perhaps of how the two have run side-by-side for close to a century now.
As the Chitimukulu says, relations between the Bemba Royal Establishment and Government have normalised as indicated by the presence of President Lungu at his coronation.
Although other Bemba chiefs embraced Catholicism earlier, the Chitimukulu only did so in 1922 when the Malole Parish was established, and since then, most Chitimukulus have been Catholic.
The new Chitimukulu, Kanyanta Manga II, is no exception.
After the traditional rituals that were performed by the Bashilubemba on Thursday night, which the public was not privy to, yesterday’s affair, attended by about 30 traditional leaders, President Lungu and some Cabinet ministers and opposition political leaders, was dominated by a church service in the morning, which was conducted by Kasama diocese Archbishop Ignatius Chama.
The Archbishop, in his homily, said leadership comes from God, including that of the new Chitimukulu.
“Your leadership should be for everyone. When your subjects come to complain about land, listen to them. Politicians will come to you, tell them you’ve no power to decide on behalf of the people,” Archbishop Chama said as the audience applauded.
After the sermon, Chitimukulu and Nankoko Fukatila Bana (wife) took the Holy Communion, a situation which led to scuffles between journalists and security personnel, who did not want them to get near.
A few expletives were exchanged despite the fact that Ku Mwende Ng’ombe had been turned into a de facto parish. That the journalists wanted close-ups is understandable. In any case, everyone wanted to be near and watch the proceedings or at least have a glimpse of the new Chitimukulu.
The 30 traditional leaders in attendance included the chairperson for the House of Chiefs Chieftainess Nkomeshya Mukamambo II, and Paramount Chief Mpezeni of the Ngoni people, who made a grand entry as he was escorted by his impis.
After President Lungu’s speech, the Ngoni impis were eager to re-create a mini N’cwala ceremony. If they were a spectacle to watch, then President Lungu’s interpreter, Samuel Mukupa, was a marvel with his command of the Bemba language.
Finally, the Bemba people have a new commander – the Mwine Lubemba.
And in his speech, the Chitimukulu said: “We want to put the past behind us. We want to assure you [President Lungu] that it’s our desire to work with your Government in our common desire to develop the country.”
The speech was read by Kasonde Kasutu at Ku Mwende Ng’ombe grounds during the coronation ceremony.
Mwine Lubemba touched on various issues including education, health, infrastructure development, agriculture, tradition and culture and the Church.
It was a speech that could pass for a political party manifesto as he went into detail on the need to develop higher learning institutions, add value to products like jatropha and sugar cane in order to produce bio-gas, introduce out-grower schemes for coffee growing and provision of decent shelter and clean drinking water for all, as well as the potential that lies in Luapula, Northern and Muchinga provinces.
But he emphasised his desire to work with the Government to realise development in the area as well as the importance of his coronation.
“For us, this occasion is important. It reminds us of who we are as a people. As a people, we believe in traditions and customs, these are what form our values. That’s why we appeal to the government not to interfere in our affairs,” he said.
“To the Church, we want to say thank you for your prayers. It’s your prayers that have made my selection and coronation peaceful. Continue praying for me so that I discharge my duties fairly and justly.
“I also say thank you to all the Bemba people and others who stood with us. You were pillars of support, and without you, we wouldn’t be with you today. And to the Government, let us work together to develop our country.”
The Chitimukulu said there are a lot of development opportunities in Luapula, Northern and Muchinga provinces which, if explored, can lead to reduction in poverty and unemployment levels.
“The three provinces have large tracts of land which are unused. They also have a lot of water bodies and good rainfall… Working together, and our ‘One Zambia, One Nation’, we can develop our country,” he said.

You sound quite dejected. Is reality settling in?
Its OK, rest in the comfort that you are the biggest opposition.

Its gratifying to note that ECL is completing the dream Sata left of refusing to install the Chiti and not bring on board the Doras. What a PARADOX. Meantime its ululation to the new Chiti..Close to 5 wasted years of petty and chaotic traditional rhetoric. I would love to see Mama Nkundu Luo shameless opening a ceremony in N/Western Province when she should ve been where it mattered most..for reconciliation -at the coronation..Loser!!!
