‘It Is A Shame That Some Lusakans Are Still Using Pit Latrines’

Millennium Challenge Account-Zambia(MCA) Director of Communication and Outreach John Kunda is worried that most houses in Lusaka are not connected to a sewer system 53 years after independence.

And Dr Kunda says there has been a challenge to expand water projects  such as putting up new water pipes in Lusaka is already built.

Speaking at the Water Aid discussion programme anchored by Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company Public Relations Officer Chamba Muzungu, Dr Kunda said the water system  in some parts of Lusaka is contaminated because most houses are not connected to the sewer facility.

“Please report those people who are discharging sewer in unspecified areas. It is a serious offense. They contaminate the water levels,” he protested.

Dr Kunda expressed regret that  most people are  still using pit Latrines instead of water flash toilets.

He said despite being advised to  graduate to proper  and cleaner facilities, some people in shanty compounds  have adamantly  opted for pit latrines.

“We find it strange that most of the houses in Lusaka still using pit latrines instead of water flashing  toilets. Even when you advise them to connect to the sewer system, they don’t do that. You can give them questionnaires but still they don’t fill them in,” he complained

And Dr Kunda said water expansion projects in Lusaka are hindered because the capital city is already belt.

He said if the authority is to put up water tanks and pipes then they have to displace structures, a very expensive undertaken.
