Zambian Women Urged To Reduce On Alcohol Intake

The Southern African Alcohol Policy Alliance (SAAPA) has advised women in the country to reduce on high alcohol intake to avoid being vulnerable to vices such as sexual abuse.

SAAPA president Philip Chimponda said in an interviewyesterday that the rate at which some women are abusing alcohol is worrying.
Mr Chimponda said it is sad that some women are resorting to consuming alcohol due to the various social problems they are facing.
“I am appealing to women in the country to reduce on the high intake of alcohol so that they can protect themselves from being sexually abused by sex maniacs,” he said.

Mr Chimponda said when women are sexually abused, they usually go through emotional and physical distress. He said there is need for women to seek counselling rather than resorting to alcohol abuse when they experience social problems. Mr Chimponda also observed that alcohol is being abused because it is sold at a cheaper price.

He said there is need for Government to consider increasing tax on alcoholic beverages so as to deter people from abusing it. He said the organisation is currently raising public awareness on the dangers of alcohol abuse in communities to safeguard the lives of people.
