Vice-President Inonge Wina has cautioned politicians against perpetrating tribalism because it is not helping anyone. Mrs Wina said politicians are vanguards of tribalism and that the divisive trend should not be allowed if unity is to be enhanced in the country.
She said this in Parliament on Tuesday when she was winding up debate on estimates of revenue and expenditure for the Office of the President.
Mrs Wina said the National Assembly should not be used to fuel tribalism because this is not helping anyone. “Politicians are the vanguards of tribalism. This must not be allowed,” she said.
During debate, Mazabuka Central Member of Parliament (UPND) Gary Nkombo said President Edgar Lungu should crack down on corruption and ensure that those abusing public funds are prosecuted. Mr Nkombo said people should not be suspended because of originating from a certain region of the country.
He said the Road Development Agency (RDA) should be moved back to the Ministry of Works and Supply. “It is difficult to report corruption if the RDA is at RDA. I would like RDA to be taken back to the Ministry of Works and Supply,” he said. And Kabompo Member of Parliament (UPND) Ambrose Lufuma said people expect good governance, integrity and honesty in the management of national affairs.
Mr Lufuma said the Patriotic Front promised the people a corruption-free country and that this is what people want to see. Meanwhile, Shiwang’andu Member of Parliament (PF) Stephen Kampyongo said civil servants are punished for doing wrong and not because they come from a particular ethnic grouping.
Mr Kampyongo, who is Minister of Home Affairs, said it is unfair for any politician to make allegations without evidence, and that civil servants are required to be loyal to the presidency. A budget estimate of K68,877,221 was agreed
