Sleeping On ‘Duty’ Costs Woman Marriage

A WOMAN who likes sleeping woke up from her slumber to find that her husband had left her for another woman. A 19-year-old man of Misisi Compound narrated in a Chawama local court that he left his wife for another woman because she sleeps too much. Chimuka Muchindu told the court that Violet Juma,18, spends most of her time sleeping and does not do house chores.

Muchindu was testifying in a case in which he was sued for divorce. The couple got married in 2017 and has one child together. “My wife fails to cook and wash for me. Most of the time I find her sleeping. All was well when we just got married but problems began when she started sleeping too much,” he said. Muchindu told the court he went to the village to marry another woman because his wife stopped performing her functions at home. He said he reported Juma to her family and the pair sat down on several occasions to counsel her but to no avail.

“At one point she took me to court and the matter was resolved, but I am shocked why she has brought me here again,” Muchindu said. But Juma in her defence told the court that problems in their marriage started when she gave birth to the couple’s child. She said Muchindu lost respect for her and started talking to other women on the phone in her presence.

“My husband asked me to pack my clothes and go to my parents’ home. He later went to the village to marry another woman whom we stayed with for some time,” Juma said. She pleaded with the court in her submissions to grant the couple divorce on grounds that she has lost interest in Muchindu. I n p a s s i n g j u d g m e n t , magistrate Lewis Mumba granted the couple divorce on grounds that there was lack of love and communication in their marriage. Muchindu was also ordered to be maintaining his child by paying K200 every month with effect from June 30.
