A 50-YEAR old man of Kawambwa district in Luapula Province has burnt himself to death following a quarrel with his wife after he exchange a phone and fishing net, all valued at K250 for beer.
Able Lengwe of Mbilima village, Chief Mushota committed suicide by setting himself on fire.
Police spokesperson Esther Mwata Katongo confirmed the incident in a statement.
“It was reported that on 26th September, 2019 around 08:00 hours at Mbilima Village, Lengwe exchanged a cell phone valued at K150 and fishing nets valued at K100, for beer , the act which sparked a quarrel between him and his wife,” Katongo explained.
Katongo explained that that after the wife left for the cassava field in anger, Lengwe wrote a suicide note which he gave to his son to deliver to his relatives.
“Whilst alone home, he picked bundles of grass which were outside the grass-thatched kitchen, took them inside and set himself ablaze and was burnt beyond recognition,” she explained.
Katongo said upon visiting the scene, police concluded that it was indeed suicide and suspected no foul play and advised relatives to to bury Lengwe’s remains.
