FOR SALE: Lumwana Mines Up For Grabs

The Mine Workers Union of Zambia-MUZ- has confirmed that Lumwana Mines Management has communicated to the Union on intentions to sell the mining firm.

MUZ President, Joseph Chewe has revealed to Phoenix News in Kitwe that the President of Lumwana Barrack has confirmed that the mine was up for grabs and that the process of selling the mine is intended to take off in January 2020.

Mr. Chewe however states that there is need to rethink the model of selling mines if the country has to benefit from the mineral wealth.

He is urging government to consider running the mines stating that the state owned mines model has worked well for china and other countries.

Mr. Chewe added that the details of the sale have not yet been made available to the union and is appealing to Lumwana mines to prioritize workers interest during the sale as 2000 jobs are at risk in the intended sale.
