Mopani Employees in K3,500 Salary Increment, Zambian Managers Oppose Move to Effect Increment

COPPERBELT Mining giants Mopani Copper Mine has increased perks for its employees basic salary with an addition of K3,500 ($250) across the board, a source has told Tumfweko.

The increment is in line with the restructuring process that has engulfed the mining company in the last 6 months.

The move is aimed at cushioning the high cost of living and motivation to employees as the company aims to become a world class mine by 2023.
However, a source has disclosed that Zambian managers at Mopani in Human resource Manager George Mayeya and Chief Services Manager Senga Vundamina Chitoshi are said to have opposed the effect to new increment by the main shareholder Glencore citing ‘unknown reasons.’

Glencore Plc, a British–Swiss multinational commodity trading and mining company is massively restructuring its Zambian operation, Mopani Copper Mine, with the termination of acting Chief Executive Officer John Chiwele’s employment contract.
Glencore has engaged Grit Consulting of Australia, a change management consulting firm to undertake a thorough Mopani mine-wide audit and help transform performance that will bring back the mining company’s profitability.
Highly-placed sources close to Glencore and Grit Consulting have said Chiwele, whose substantive position was chief financial officer has since handed over to the new Chief Executive Officer Nathan Bullock from Australia, who has been appointed by Glencore. Bullock joins Mopani from BHP Olympic Dam in Australia.
The senior managers who have so far been appointed are former Mopani chief processing officer for Nkana and Mufulira, Francis De-Peer who becomes general manager – Smelter and Refinery as former chief mining officer for Nkana and Mufulira, Frans Smith has been appointed general manager – Mining and Concentrator at Mufulira.
