Mineworkers Hnion of Zambia (MUZ) has announced that it has been informed by the owners of Chambishi metals EUROSIA group of Companies of their intention to place the mine operations under care and maintenance by January month end.
And About 229 miners are to be laid off due to the ongoing developments at the mine.
Briefing the Media this morning, MUZ President Joseph Chewe described the move by the owners of Chambeshi metals as regrettable.
He said the union had a conclusive engagement with the mine over their proposal but that the mine insisted on its plan with the reasoning that they are have a challenge in sourcing for funds to sustain operations.
He said affected workers will be paid their packages as per agreement between the union and the mine.
Mr. Chewe has however called on government to consider revoking the mine licence for EUROSIA group of Companies adding that the proposed period of 2 years of placing the mine under care and maintenance is too long.
