Mistreated Wife Asks For Divorce

A Ndola wife has been granted divorce from her husband who allegedly mistreated her because she has no children with him. Bridget Mtonga, 36, narrated before Kabushi Local court that last year her husband Joseph Mumba, 40, accused her of being barren started giving her K200 for monthly grocery. Mtonga said that when she asked for money, Mumba told her to get out of his house and go to her father’s house because she was not doing anything in his house.

“My husband threw my items which included clothes and plates outside the house, telling me to go back to my father and threatened to kill me while insulting my parents,” she said. When Mumba chased her early this year, she went to her sister’s house but she decided to go back to her matrimonial home to reconcile with her husband of 20 years but found him started selling the household goods. She said every time she tries to reconcile with her husband he throws her belongings out of the house.

Mtonga said she is tired of the Mumba and does not want to be his wife anymore as he mistreats her. And Mumba agreed that the court dissolves their marriage as it was his wife who ran away to drinking sprees for months without telling him her whereabouts. He said it is her decision that they divorce and that the court should go ahead and dissolve the marriage.

Kafubu Presiding Senior Local Court Magistrate Agness Mulenga sitting with senior magistrates Mildred Namwizye and Evelyn Nalwizya granted the couple divorce on grounds that they both did not want to be in the marriage. She ordered the defendant to compensate the plaintiff with K 15,000 with first the instalment of K 2,000 and thereafter K500 per month.
