COMMOTION arose this morning when more than 800 workers at Zambia’s Chinese-owned Chambishi Copper Smelter on the Copperbelt Province downed tools demanding a pay rise and improved conditions of service, bringing production at the plant to a halt.
A Tumfweko check found workers outside the plant chanting anti-management slogans and this morning blocked the Kitwe-Chingola road demanding improved conditions of service which they said was too ‘cruel’ to sustain their lives.
Quick response by the Zambia Police stopped the protesting workers from damaging property.
Chambishi Smelter is a joint venture of China Non-ferrous Metals Corporation (CNMC) and Yunnan Copper Industry about 370 km north of Lusaka, processes 150,000 tonnes of blister copper per annum.
The Chambishi smelter is located in an economic zone, where Zambian authorities are waiving taxes to attract investments and encourage value addition to raw copper.
Keep checking Tumfweko as we will keep you posted of any development to this regard….

Please brothers and sisters let us wait and see what our able government will do to help us. Protests at this stage will only reflect bad on our new government. Just be patient one more time and watch these your genuine concerns be addressed amicably. Mr Shamenda , there is work to do now.

shemende and co must quikly come out and give the unions an idea of what how and when they intend to improve the workers conditions (after negotiating with investers)instead of every co protesting just to make sure they are heard.

I stand to correct you,the guys who r protesting are not chambishi copper smelter ltd employees but employees for 15MCC a company which happens to be a contractor for Chambishi Copper Smelter Ltd.

A humble request to the Minister of Labour:
1.) Minimum wage for mining shall be K5,000,000. Going underground and working 12 hours in extreme heat demands good living wage.
2.) At the end of the year, all miners who are involved in ore digging shall be entitled to profit sharing equivalent to 10% of the profit of the mines.
3.) Miners shall be entitled to convert their profit sharing into shares of the mine at a price agreed in advance, but not more than 4-5 times of after tax profits of the mine. Zambians and for that matter the most important stakeholders, the workers shall be empowered, have ownership feeling with consequent benefits for the investors, government and future generations.

Friends at Tumfweko please research properly before publishing a story. I operate from Chambishi Copper Smelter and production is going on smoothly as those people protesting are for 15MCC a Chinese construction company and as Iam writting, Iam inside the plant and everything here is normal as CCS workers have resolved to be patient and wait for our new government to resolve all outstanding issues and also to give our Labour and Mines Ministers more time to do what they can do to imrove our conditions as they have promised.

More money in our pockets yakokola ukuchita materialize.Pa last kulusa patience ngefifine filechitika.Awe abena Shamenda bendesheko ukumendeka minimum wage. There is nothing wrong with striking if workers are not happy with their working conditions to press management to act fast.Infact it’s one of the tools at the workers disposal to inluence management to look into their plight pronto.
@rightful:nice suggestion, hope bakateka sata will adopt it so that wealth is distributed across the board. This looks like the only way ubunonshi bwingasalangana ku ma poor miners who have been working like slaves since independence. As if tatwapoka ubuntungwa, our people are still sufferers.Endesheniko ba boma because the clock is ticking fast. You are remaining with only 74 days to fulfil your promise of more money in our pockets.

The government should put a ban on the export of blister copper, because the they only tax copper on export while it contains other minerals like goldand cobolt that are more expensive than copper.
