LABOUR and Social Security minister Fackson Shamenda has said his ministry will soon be restructured to improve service delivery and enhance productivity.
Mr Shamenda, who made the disclosure when he toured some companies in Mufulira, said the move was aimed at reorganising the ministry to enhance efficiency.
He said once restructured labour related matters would be resolved in a short space of time unlike the case was now.
The minister said he had noted with concern that labour-related matters in some cases dragged on for a long time.
“I will see to it that all labour matters are attended to within a month and if we can’t resolve a problem within the stated period at the labour office then we will advise the parties concerned to take it to court without wasting peoples’ time,” said Mr Shamenda.
Restructuring, he added, would also involve the redefining of some labour laws as some of them were outdated.
Mr Shamenda said his vision was to turn the ministry into a proactive entity to enhance productivity.
“I do not want to see a situation where the ministry of labour only gets involved when a labour dispute of some kind arises in a company.
“I want the officers in the ministry to get involved in issues concerning labour even when the situation appears to be calm on the ground,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mr Shamenda has expressed displeasure at the state of some of the labour office buildings in the country.
The minister was particularly unhappy with the state of the labour office in Mufulira which is in a dilapidated condition.
