Zambian Students Studying In Russia Feel Neglected By Govt, Hunger Strikes Them

Dear Editor,
RE: Zambian Students in Russia starved by their own GOVERNMENT again .

It seems as the order of the day or is it no man’s business that the malfunctioned system of running operations in Zambia must be addressed? Let me start by saying the mediocrity of the PF government is unfathomable! It seems the President is firing the wrong people. I suggest he fires the minister of education or whoever is in charge of student allowances, because we are starving. We have no food! Nothing! ничего вообще!
Unlike UNZA or CBU students, we do not have the luxury of throwing stones in order to be heard (I mean whose cars are we going to smash here in Russia anyway?). But believe it or not, if we had that opportunity, we could smash more than just cars. We would start with the fat cat sitting on our money. I mean, what kind of incompetence is this? This is a clear sign of lack of leadership and disorganization of the highest order.
First of all, we have not been paid our meal allowances up to now. According to the contract that we signed before we accepted our scholarship, we are supposed to be paid every after 4months starting from January of every year. The last time we were paid was the 30th of May. We were supposed to be paid in august and yet we are crossing into October without a clear date on when we will be paid. It seems someone is sleeping on the job! The start of every academic year needs a certain amount of money. Firstly, we need about $200 for medical insurance (varies from university to university), about $100 for hostel fees, about $100 for renewal of the student Visa and about $50 for full medical checkups. In short, a student needs a minimum of about $500 at the start of every academic year. Most universities do not allow students to start school without the above mentioned requirements. There is a far cry amongst the Zambian community here. Not only are we a joke, we are also recurrent beggars, our colleagues from other countries are even avoiding us now, simply because they are tired of our endless demands, because we have no ones to run to..if not them!. We are in so much debt. I usually wonder why the government keeps on sending students here when they cannot afford to take care of the few that are here. In case you haven’t noticed, each year, Zambia sends more students here than any other country in Africa. For instance, for the 2012-2013 academic years, Zambia sent around 99 students while countries like Ghana sent only 18 students.
Secondly, we desperately need an increment. The last time we got an increment was in 2008 right before the world financial crisis. Ever since, prices of goods has risen as much as 50%. The $250 per month is the not enough anymore. Russia is a very expensive place to live in. not long ago, Moscow was found to be the most expensive city. our (well taken care-of) fellow students from Botswana gets $750, Nigeria gets $500, Angola gets $500 and Guinea gets $450 per month, just to mention the least. and their money comes on time, maybe simply because their govt understands better what it takes to a foreign student in an alien land like Russia. As far as am concerned, Zambia sends the most students and pays the least allowance. We are not even given book allowances and project allowances which are very cardinal to any university student. We really don’t know what is contained in the memorandum of understanding between the Russian and the Zambian governments. It seems our government is in such a hurry to damp us here and forget about us. we thought the MMD govt was in error by giving us our money at least after 5 months instead of 4months as per agreement, but in this new regime, we’re just witnessing the worst as we are living in constant fear because we are already in the 6th month and not even a word from the people responsible for our well being. i don’t know how loud we have to cry for our voices to be heard but i beg whoever is sitting on our mulla to be compassionate enough as humankind and hear our cries ”twachula twapapata mwebuteko”.
My final appeal to the PF government is to efficient enough in the way they hundle NATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES. please pay us on time and take some time to revise on what you offer to us. A small increment won’t hurt, because we will provide for our budgets to go beyond this unforeseen helling periods of total starvation. I believe no soul has to be lost to be convinced that the house is not in order but at the moment, what I and my fellow intellectuals are going through, is pretty worrisome as we have massively cut our eating schedules due to reasons best known to our own GOVERNMENT! And to anyone who wishes to come and study here under the Russian/Zambian scholarship, do more consultations and make sure your parents can stand for you in days like these. But the fact is most of us here, we solely and heartly rely 100% on our govt as the financial parent because it is very difficult for our parents to provide anything. That was the contact we signed, that our govt to take care of us financially otherwise few would have made it here. School is a lot tougher here, when you are constantly thinking on how and when you will pay your debtors just because your government has no clue about your well being.
with these few submissions, I REST MY CASE!
Yours faithfully,
Economics Zambian students in Russia

Tumfweko – your headlines leave much to be desired!! How can someone starve from ‘hunger’ – ??? Anyway, for those suffering students, I suggest the female ones become ladies of the night with the oligarchs there – I hear they love black women. As for the men, let them hook some old wealthy widows

its a shame that our own can suffer so much. Gov never learns from its mistakes, I suggest that a number of you camp at either the zambian embassy or the ambassadors residence until they sort you out. Thats you only option if things have got to a point were you’ve no money at all.

One wonders why these chaps rush to get scholarships to Russia. Kulwisha ukukwela indeke or what? Cheap is expensive mwebantu. It’s rare for the government to send such a large number of students to tertiary institutions in renowned countries like the UK, US or Australia. When you are out there, minimum living expenses is somewhere around $50,000 for a two year course. Now $250 or is it $100 per month, how can you survive? Iwe mwaiche ulelalila zigolo no Kuwa pa last.

i for one can not feel for you guys. because the way these people are awarded scholarships is very corrupt. only those who are known or related to those in higher offices benefit, these scholarships are meant for those who are poor but very bright. i wonder if there is any out of those 99 students from the rural part of zambia. let your corrupt relatives supplement your budget.

Completed my studies there in 2009. Seriously if you are creative enough theirs no way you can actually be reduced to a beggar. Its not like this place (zed) where you cant find a job to get you by as a student. Most of us used to earn extra money doing some work! i used to have 3 jobs at a time! twice in a week i worked at a library, other days i’d wait at a restaurant, worked as a translator etc….racism is there and its a bit ruff but begging nishi watemwafye. Am not saying you should not be paid but you can also help yourself if at all you really want to attain what you want from ther.

$250 is five times better than i used to get wen i was a student probably 3 times better than the current students @unza.being an economist, try to take it as yo final yr project and offer practical solutions as to hw u cud improve on the timely disbursment of meal allowance.its a pity wen u cm bk to zed u will likely delay other pipos salaries.in all grz funding z never adequate ask yo collegues @unza.swallow yo pride and ask 4 help from parents.pliz students stop borrowing and live within yo means.
