Chipata MMD Councillor Accuses UNIP, MMD Govts of Neglect

AN MMD councillor in Chipata has accused UNIP and MMD governments of having neglected his ward by not building a secondary school.
In an interview, Dilika ward councillor Alberto Phiri said lack of a secondary school had compounded illiteracy in his area.
Phiri appealed to the PF government to consider building a secondary school in his ward.

“I must say that my ward had been neglected by the previous two governments, which is UNIP and MMD. All the secondary schools are on one side and there is not even a single secondary school in Dilika ward. I am appealing to the PF government which I regard as a very practical government to do something,” he said.

And some Dilika ward residents have accused Phiri of imposing the membership of the 2012 Ward Development Committee.
In a letter addressed to Chipata town clerk and copied to the provincial local government officer, the residents stated that issues of development should be non-partisan and community-driven.

They observed that some party cadres who spearheaded the previous unfinished projects were still on the committees.
The residents who were perceived to be PF members alleged that the current committee was made up of MMD cadres.

They appealed to the town clerk to ensure that the committee members were sensitised on how ward development committees should be formed.
But Phiri said he never had a hand in the formation of the committee as it was selected before he became the councillor.
He said there was nothing he could do as the mandate for the current committee would end next year.
“What they (Dilika ward residents) should know is that I am a civic leader, I am not a politician. I will become a politician in 2016,” Phiri said.
