Relatives of Ibex Hill Tragedy Reject K4M Compensation
Relatives of the five casual workers who died after being buried in a trench in Lusaka’s Ibex Hill area have rejected the four million kwacha funeral grant.
The five died after they were buried in sand after the earth curved in when they were digging a trench for a sewer pipe.
Spokesperson for the group Kupukulo Musenga has described the grant as a joke stating that the money is not enough compared to the loss of life.
Mr. Musenga, who lost a son in the tragic accident,said that higher authorities should intervene in the matter.
Mr. Musenga has accused the Zambia police of scheming to protect the private contractor whose sewer line was being worked on.
Another family member, Regina Namwewa, who lost a brother, has threatened to abandon the body in Lusaka so that it is buried by the contractor.
But the Zambia police have dismissed assertions that it is shielding the contactor.
The bereaved families went to seek an audience with Lusaka district commissioner, Ashwell Kampengele and were then referred to the disaster management and mitigation unit-DMMU office.
Unconfirmed reports indicate that t the DMMU office has agreed to offer some assistance through the provision of food.

I just want to find more to this.DMMU is providing food stuffs only.Funeral grant from the Contractor.Does it mean it is the end of everything?We should find a solution to this matter.If they where insured then the insurance will come in and help to compensate.
Still the question stands.Is it compensation or Funeral grant and it ends here.
If the Contractor did not insure them let him seek solution and sit down with the relatives of our late brothers.Am sure the solution to this will be found.May GOD bless you all.

No safety measures in place here and elsewhere also. Not an uncommon sad story indeed nowadays! Time when relative who previously never gave a damn about you, think of the stakes. Consolation is there is God and when we are believers, and through Jesus Christ, our Saviour be we dead or alive, makes no difference to Him and us too! We will be joint heirs!

These peolpe should get a good lawyer and sue both the owner of the property and the contractor for negigence leading to death – this is a serious case and I am glad they have rejected this paltry offer. Zambians are finally eralising and exercising their rights

Misunderstanding between the relatives and the employer is having no knowledge between compa. and grant, Imwe isho impiya shakushita mo ifya kulya pa chililo, ishamalipilo nga mwa shika elyo kukekale panshi, please those who know the difference between grant and comp. should explain, otherwise tabaka shike. Funeral Grant to cater for funeral expenses only. Life assurance companies offer what we call Group Life Assurance to cater for death of an employee. This benefit is calculated according to the income earned by the employee as it is assumed in insurance that you will have a financial loss in the family. But when you look at it closely how much do these guys earn?

The way i understand it this is just a funeral grant(to help with funeral expenses). Not compensation, some one needs to explain to the relatives this, otherwise such misunderstandings are not good, especially where lives have been lost. @ tom bar, stan your call uleishiba ifya ku jokingilako not ifii…swine.
