‘My Husband Has Turned Me into A Punching Bag’ Wife Tells Court

A LUSAKA woman who said she was fed up of being a punch bag for her husband caused laughter in a Lusaka Boma court when she said his behaviour had made her lose interest in him.
Brenda Sangulube, 30, of Chilulu told the court that it’s now been two years since she had sex with him “which  indicates that love had died in their marriage”.
This was heard before senior principal magistrate Hildah Choonya and senior court magistrate Morgan Kanyika in a case in which Sangulube dragged Brian Moonga, 35, of Jack to court for divorce.
Sangulube said they got married in 2001 but problems in their marriage started in 2002 when she had a baby after which her breasts would swell.
She said because of that, she experienced pain which hindered her from going to cultivate their fields.
“Your honour, I would just sleep because of the pain but when my husband would find 3me asleep, he would beat me up accusing me of laziness,” she said.
Sangulube said when she fell pregnant with her second child, she travelled out of town to her mother to deliver but when she went back to home, she found a woman Choonya had married in her absence.
She said she went back to her parents but Moonga followed and pleaded with her to go back with him saying he would never beat her again and that he would stop seeing the other woman.
Sangulube said despite his promise Moonga continued the extra-marital affair.
She also accused Moonga’s family of not wanting her.
“They said if he married me, he would never be rich,” she said.
Sangulube said as if that was not enough, the woman he had married died and that brought fear into her thus leading her to run away from him because she was sure he had a ‘ghost’ holding on to him as per traditional belief since he had lost a ‘spouse’.
When cross examined on how sure she was that Moonga had a ‘ghost, Sangulume said she used to see a white frame around him.
She said this left her with no choice but to seek for divorce.
And in his statement Moonga said he never beat Sangulube but was not happy with her behaviour as she was lazy.
He said each time during farming season; she would run away to her parents only to come back during harvest.
Moonga said Sangulube did not even want to take care of his relatives.
He said she eventually got a job in a restaurant and moved out of their matrimonial home and travelled to the village where she got some traditional medicine for him to bathe in to get rid of the ‘ghost’.
“I refused to bathe in that medicine and this riled Sangulube who said it was a taboo to live with an uncleansed man,” he said.
Moonga said despite Sangulube’s behaviour, he still loves her and is against divorce.
In passing judgment, Ms Choonya said it was impossible for the court to force Sangulube not to divorce Moonga as she was adamant about it.
The court therefore granted divorce and ordered Moonga to pay Sangulube K10 million as compensation.

Do something, women have died because of shipikisha club, ichikalipa chufya imwine, men of those days are different from men of these days, even God has prepared hell for those that are admant. and imagine the God of everything, at last some will be found in hell, so why put in press inga abena fimbusa.

Women these days are sturbon, do we know the story from the other side.

What is good of being a man? A woman insist 4 a divorce & a man is made to compersate ha. Can someone who knows it better make it clear to me on how judgment is arrived at on such cases. Is it always a man to compersate a woman or it sometimes happen vice versa? Sorry moonga my bro chalo mwene chilili.

Divorce it’s a sin before God,but in this couple its like it is no Jesus who can take care of them, if you leave them we can lose one already the wife complain that she is now the punching bag…
so just leave the court to decide.

Men are asked to pay compensation to maintain the children and also because women are regarded as the weaker sex and mostly underprevileged. Imagine your sister divorcing for whatever reason and she has three kids but with no shelter, food, etc. Relatives rarely help. Its really a burden on her. You know, most men behave like dogs. they produce children and are likely to forget them after divorce. In addition, a man “demonked” the woman and she is no longer “fresh” to compete favourably for another marriage. This is partly why courts compel men to compensate their wives at divorce.

Let us not take it as being compensation but an allowance to assist the wife to educate the children as well as to feed them. besides he will not pay the whole amount at once.

From what i know the woman was suppose to pay the man since the man stil wanted to stay with her but the woman refused.i have a niece who refused the husband cos he was so hard on she would go to fields 6am only to come bakc at 6pm with the children she has 3 gals teenagers but they looked like house wives no time to bath as other gals did in the village until she had enough of it she filed for divorce but the court didnt even listen to her story which every person in the village new she was told to compensate him it was not fair on her.so i wonder how this woman has to be compensated when shes the one who wants divorce.

Good! the court should have made it 20 mil. Assaulting her and cheating on her and in typical african style it’s always blame the woman for male BS so it’s good that the law has caught up with that nonsense.

First of all, the bible indicates that divorce is allowed if one commits adultery. this man took another woman into his matrimonial home. too many bloggers are complete ignoramuses. always accusing the woman yet you could see that she had a health problem. can you honestly also stay with someone who beats you up? i fear for the women who will marry some of you bloggers.
