Kitwe Hubby Tells Court ‘She Poured Hot Porridge on Me For Failing to Buy Baby Powder’

By KATEBE CHENGO
A MAN OF Kitwe’s Bulangililo on Tuesday told the Kitwe Magistrate’s court how his wife poured hot porridge on him when he failed to buy baby powder for their child.
Nelson Mwanza, 30 of 629 Bulangililo township testified before Magistrate Daniel Musonda that on October 12 this year around 20:00 hours, a woman selling baby powder approached him at his house and asked him to buy some.
Mr Mwanza said he refused to buy the baby powder because his wife who was better placed to know what was right for the child, was not home.

“It would appear that the trader met my wife at the gate and told her that I did not buy the powder….as soon as she came into the yard, she started hurling insults at me saying I am an irresponsible man,” Mr Mwanza said.
He told the court that his wife Mavis Mwansa continued to abuse him verbally, wondering what kind of a man he was who could not afford to buy baby powder.
Mr Mwanza said Mwansa went behind the house, got a boiling pot of porridge and poured it on him.
Mwansa is charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, contrary to section 248 of the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.
Particulars of the offence are that Mwansa on October 12, 2012 in Kitwe, did pour hot porridge on Mr Mwanza and occasioned him actual bodily harm.
Mr Mwanza told the court that Mwansa is a drunkard who has no respect for him. The couple has three children together.
“Your honour this woman takes alcohol like water and I am afraid of her because she is violent most of the time. She says I am lazy and every time I fail to buy food for the family, the whole neighborhood will know,” he said.
Mwanza who spent three days in hospital after the incident, said his wife usually abuses him.
But in cross-examination, Mwansa accused her husband of threatening to stab their baby because he did not approve of the name she was calling the infant by.
The matter has been adjourned to November 30 for continued trial and Mwansa is remanded at Kamfinsa State Prison.

That is mostly the problem if the wife becomes the head of the house.dust never settles.

For the man, look for something that will earn you a small income.

Divorce shud be da last option lookng how long dis couple has been togather & also da # of children dey have. If he dares 2 do so, he will be made 2 compersate da wife & kids will suffer being brot up by single parent. I wud advise him 2 come up with source of income & let da wife be talked 2. She needs 2 change ha way of beer drinkng life. They also need 2 find God in their lives.

@ Alabama – I totally agree with you. baby powder is just that – one can get it from anywhere in zambia. Had it been baby MILK FORMULA, we would have sided with the man.

This man has dis-respected the wife by bringing the girlfriend to the family home – he deserves the porridge incident!!!

‘…. because he did not approve of the name she calls the child….’
Chances are that he is not the father & he knows it.
The fight was not about the powder, powder was only the trigger!! The problem is deep rooted.
