OVERNMENT will start publicising names of companies that are generating solid waste without putting in place mechanisms for managing it.
Local Government and Housing Minister Emerine Kabanshi said in Lusaka yesterday that the Government was concerned that manufacturers of plastic paper, glass bottles, opaque beer, mobile phone scratch cards and other solid waste had not invested in solid management.
“My ministry will consider a naming-and-shaming approach by advertising in the mass media organisations that are generating solid waste without putting in place mechanisms to manage it,” she said.
Ms Kabanshi said everyone should be responsible for their end products that continued to contaminate the environment.
She was speaking at a national stakeholders’ consultative meeting on solid waste management at Government Complex.
The minister said all waste producers were required to use solid waste management systems established by the council in their areas of jurisdiction.

This is not really the solution. The city council and government just need to come up with proper and tough regulation and implement them stringently without fear or favour.
This is a small problem, our leader just have no will power to resolve it.

who take responsibility of these dumpy alcohol bottles? if you look around, these priceless bottles lay around everywhere without any1 claiming responsibility. Zambia breweries should find a solution to this mess. why not increase cans as opposed to priceless-bottles. same goes for plastic bags, lets try paper! in the 80s we had more paper than plastic. Paper is easy to manage as a waste than plastic. tomato yonse ni muli plastic.

Start with the vendors and consumers educate them on disposing waste and every Zambian must be vigilant to arrest anyone found throwing litre anyhow and lastly councils must buy more than enough trucks for waste management than waiting for waste to accumu.

Brilliant Idea. But the starting point is the mindset of the general citizen. Liter is dropped anywhere anytime any type, including human waste. Especially you so called town men/boys. You point your little pipes everywhere…atase.
