THE Chinsali Magistrate’s Court has convicted and jailed a 20-year-old expectant mother for trafficking in miraa.
Appearing before magistrate Shaderick Chanda for judgment on Monday was Ruth Chilambo of Chiyanga Village in Nakonde district charged with one count of trafficking in a psychotropic substance.
Particulars of the offence are that Chilambo, on April 3 this year in Nakonde, trafficked in 30.5 kilogrammes of miraa.
Passing the sentence, Mr Chanda said he found Chilambo guilty on her own guilty plea and sentenced her accordingly.
Mr Chanda said being a widow and pregnant is no excuse for Chilambo to involve herself in such illegal business.
In mitigation, Chilambo pleaded for leniency because she is a widow and nine months pregnant.
Chilambo said she engaged in drug trafficking because she needed to prepare for a newly-born baby. – ZANIS
