Govt Commitment In Protecting Zambian Workers Questioned

Stakeholders are questioning Government’s commitment towards the plight of the over 300 workers sent on indefinite forced leave by Chambishi Metals.

The future of these workers with Chambishi Metals appears uncertain as the Government is yet to meet the company management to chat the way forward.

Speaking on Face to Face programme on Saturday, Chambishi based community leader Chikabale Kaleta said the Government should urgently compel Chambishi Metals to recall workers or surrender the mine.

“If they have failed to run the mine they should let go,” Mr Kaleta said.

Several callers who participated on Face to Face also questioned the commitment of trade unions and the Government towards the plight of the over 300 workers.

“The Minister of Mines Richard Musukwa is busy campaigning in Roan while miners in Chambishi are suffering,” one caller said.

Another caller added:” Where is the spirit of Lawrence Katilungu in the unions?”

During a meeting with the affected workers over a month ago, Kalulushi Member of Parliament Kampamba Chewe promised that the Government would intervene.

And Chambishi Metals General Manager Whiteson Lumbwe has told Radio Icengelo News that he doesn’t speak to the media.

“Only the owners ERG can speak to the media,” Mr Lumbwe said before cutting the phone call.
