Statement Should Not Retaliate To South Africa’s Xenophobic Attacks

September 4, 2019

President Edgar Lungu’s stance to engage his South African counterpart Cyril Ramaphosa to help curb the xenophobic attacks in that country is most welcome and commendable.

The ruling Patriotic Front (PF)’s decision to also engage their counterpart ,the ruling African National Congress (ANC) to prevail over the xenophobic attacks in that country is most welcome as  both engagements at Presidential and Party level will help curb the inhuman and barbaric  attacks unleashed on foreign nationals.

We are confident that the move to engage authorities in that country following the brutal attack on Zambian nationals based in South Africa as well as escalating series of attacks targeted at foreign nationals will yield positive results.

We are also urging Zambians to heed Home Affairs Minister Honorable Steven Kampyongo’s timely calls on them not to retaliate but remain calm as current engagements with the South African authorities will help curb such inhuman and barbaric attacks.

Whilst the feelings of Zambians over what is happening to foreigners in South Africa is understandable, we do not expect them to take the law into their own hands by engaging in activities such as attacking South African owned business entities in Zambia.
