Statement On Why Opposition Is A National Disaster In Zambia

September 20, 2019

The Opposition in Zambian is a national disaster as some of them have lamentably failed to provide checks and balances to Government.

Suffice to mention that some opposition parties have abandoned their critical role by assuming they ‘re the ones in the driving seat when in fact not.

One typical example is that of UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema who recently ‘declared’ hunger situation in the country as a national disaster when he does not wield such powers.

However, the Zambian constitution vests powers to make such declarations in the Republican President who is Edgar Chagwa Lungu, and not Hichilema.

We advise the opposition leaders in the country to desist from engaging in activities that are tantamount to usurping powers of the Republican President.

We are alive to President Lungu’s directive to Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) that no Zambian should die from hunger.

Indeed, the DMMU has been distributing food relief to hunger –hit areas in all parts of the country in line with the presidential directive.

Whilst citizens are welcome to make donations towards mitigating hunger situation in the country, we expect them to work in collaboration with the DMMU.

However, we have noted with dismay that some donations made by a known opposition leader recently in Lusaka were meant to gain cheap political mileage, and not out of concern for the hunger-stricken people.

In view of the foregoing, it is abundantly clear that the opposition in Zambia is a national disaster.
