Student Nurses Raped At Boarding House

Lusaka, Kitwe TWO student nurses have been raped by unknown people who broke into their boarding house in Kafue. The incident happened last week Friday around 02:00 hours in Greenfield. Police spokesperson Esther Katongo said in an interview yesterday that the two women, aged 21 and 23, reported the matter to police.

“No arrest has been made yet and investigations into the matter have been instituted. The suspects are not known,” Ms Katongo said. She said the two victims were issued with medical report forms and were attended to at the hospital. Ms Katongo urged the public to ensure that their doors are wellsecured before they go to sleep to avoid intruders.

She said people should also have numbers for police stations and posts near them to seek quick response in times of crimes and other incidents. “It is important to have numbers for police stations because it is quicker for the police to respond when a crime is happening near them,” she said. In another incident, a 44-yearold man in Mafinga District has drowned after he was swept away in a fast-flowing stream that swelled after heavy rains. Geoffrey Sikanyika, of Lunyika, drowned on Sunday night on his way to visit his second wife, who lives across the Kantonga stream. He attempted to cross the stream, which had overflowed the bridge.

Muchinga Commissioner of Police Joel Njase said in an interview yesterday that police officers received a report from the Community Crime Prevention Unit (CCPU) that Mr Sikanyika drowned around 22:00 hours. Mr Njase said the area experienced a heavy downpour on the fateful day which flooded the stream. He said the body was discovered by members of the public as they were crossing the bridge. He said no foul play is suspected and that Mr Sikanyika’s relatives have been advised to bury the body

Sad such things should be happening with impunity. The providers of these boarding houses should consider increasing security and not just charging exorbitant fees!
