FODEP : PF Government Should Enshrine Date Of Elections In The Constitution

Foundation for Democratic Process (FODEP) says the new Patriotic Front government should ensure that the date of elections is enshrined in the constitution.
FODEP president Alex N’goma has noted that having a fixed date for elections in the constitution will help the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to plan effectively for the elections.
Dr. N’goma tells Qfm radio station that the all the hiccups that were experienced during the recent elections was as a result of a limited timeframe that the Commission had to plan for the election.
He adds that the immediate past president delayed to announce the date of elections a situation he says piled a lot of pressure on the ECZ to adequately prepare for the elections.
The elections which were held last week saw a lot of election material being distributed late to the polling stations while a number of local government candidates were erroneously omitted from the from the ballot paper forcing the commission to defer the elections.
Dr. N’goma has further suggested that the new government should also consider involving an independent body that would be responsible for appointing the ECZ chairperson and commissioners saying credibility in the commission can only be restored once the institution becomes independent from political interference.

We are all waiting patiently to see sanity restored in all these commissions. Credibility and objectivity will sincerely be restored when we allow these to opporate independently starting from the appointment level to their operations.

    Many Thanks

Also, Federal state, dual citizenship, right to information act, independent judiciary, career civil service appointed by Public Service Commission than by the President or minister, many many more reforms needed.
