PF Urged To ‘Baptize’ And Repeal ZNBC And IBA Acts

The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Zambia has called upon the Patriotic Front government to immediately repeal and ‘baptize’ the ZNBC and the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) Acts of 2010 so that the minister of information does not appoint the board of directors for the two institutions.
And MISA has prodded government to come up with media friendly laws.
Chapter chairperson Daniel Sikazwe says that MISA is concerned that ZNBC, Times of Zambia and the Zambia Daily Mail were biased towards the MMD prior to the tripartite elections a situation he says did not afford Zambians an opportunity to make informed decisions on all political players.
In his congratulatory message to President Sata, Sikazwe says this is an opportune time for the PF government to show commitment to the will of the people by ensuring that the three public media are indeed public both legally and in practice.
And Sikazwe has appealed to government to also ensure that the Freedom of Information Bill of 2002 is re-introduced in parliament as the first step towards improving governance in Zambia.
He says this will allow the public to effectively participate in the governance of the country.
Sikazwe notes that improving the governance system in Zambia cannot fully be achieved if the channels of communication are still in the hands of the state.
Meanwhile, Sikazwe has urged government to look into the issue of media self regulation as a matter of urgency.
He feels that although the media should be regulated, such regulation should be done by the media practitioners themselves.

WE SHALL DEAL WITH THAT ISSUE NEXT YEAR. AT THE MOMENT WE NEED THESE INSTITUTIONS TO HELP US IN PF TO MAKE SURE THAT WE ARE FULLY KNOWN ACROSS THE COUNTRY. BESIDES, THIS IS NOT ONE OF OUR 90 DAYS PROMISES. JUST WAIT SIKAZWE, YOUR IDEA IS GOOD, BUT AT THE MOMENT THIS ISSUE IS NOT URGENT.

It is cardinal to realise that the payment of tv licence doesnot necessarily mean the govt of the days enjoys popularily. It spells out the wish of those who pay the licence fees and as a result the znbc tv has a mandate to satisfy the wish of tv licence payers. In this regard, the govt of the day should not in any way pops its business into the running of the institution. I wish to salute umwaice wandi daniel sikazwe for taking a bold stance and explains his view over the running of govt owned media institutions to the present govt. Thumbs up mwaice.

True that “the MIZ” whatever the name it you and your MMD party can’t see anything sensible than just using public funds. I have a feeling that you are ***** that celebrated when Nyama Soya removed the “abuse of office” clause from the constitution. Didn’t you see how lazy people started getting at work? BE CAREFUL WITH YOUR IMMATURE COMMENTS.
