Zambian miners at Chinese- owned NFC Africa Mining wen on strike again on Tuesday after the company refused to raise their wages by nearly 100 percent as agreed last week, the National Union of Mine and Allied Workers said.
“The workers have again gone on strike. They were promised a pay rise of 2 million Zambian kwacha ($400) per month, which they have not been given,” the union president Mundia Sikufele told Reuters.
About 2,000 workers at NFC Africa Mining, majority-owned by China Nonferrous Metals Mining Corporation, first went on a strike earlier this month demanding higher wages.
Sikufele said the workers called off the strike earlier this month after the government asked the management to give them a 2 million kwacha pay rise on Oct. 10.
“But the government, which proposed the 2 million kwacha is now saying the right procedure is for the workers to allow the union to negotiate with the management,” Sikufele said.
Long-time opposition leader Michael Sata won election in the southern African country on Sept. 20 on a populist platform that included criticism of foreign investors and promises to improve the lives of workers.
In his first official meeting as president, Sata saw Chinese ambassador Zhou Yuxiao in an effort to dispel fears his sometimes fierce anti-Chinese rhetoric while in opposition would translate into a shift in investment policy.
He also made clear that Chinese companies, which have ploughed more than $2 billion into developing the mining sector, would not get preferential treatment. ($1 = 5005.000 Zambian Kwachas)

Lets act like civilised people & stop insults. It makes all Zambians look bad.
b4 we crucify the Chinese we should ourselves improve the living standards for our own civil servants. The Chinese are paying more than the legally set minimum wage. We should instead appeal to the yellow men for the sake of morality to improve conditions.

Chinese Investment….firstly rumour has it that the meeting with the Chinese ambassador was not an official meeting (rather it was keeping up with tradition according to the previous regime the diplomat could drop by state house without an official appointment)true that the Chinese have invested in the mining sector but have you also noted that it is parrallel to the Gerabo (copper thieves)activities bcoz the chinese buy stolen copper. our policies should really be looked at..Mbolo don, am glad you have found happiness in a ipad and a blonde woman. am a single mother 36yrs old woman with a 16yrs old son getting less than K2,500,000 per month…..and am content with where i am also

This no sense by NFC workers demanding K2 Million salary increase across the board was started by the amature deputy minister of labour Rayford Mbulu when he instructed the management at the mine to increase salaries for the workers by that much. Not too long ago, Mr Mbulu was a miner himself and he knows it is not possible for the mine to effect such an increment. However, because PF won the election on the populist slogan of ‘more money in the pocket’the deputy minister can not distinguish between mere political rhetoric and reality. He is still learning the ropes and to me it appears that the learning curve of this govt is going to be long going by what is happening now.Total DRAMA at play!
