THE Story Of ‘Donchi Kubeba’

PERHAPS in a manner that was unprecedented, artistes found themselves in the thick-of-things as the country went to the September 20 general elections.

The pros and cons of that have been a matter of some intense discussion in the industry with some critics fearing that some artistes may be left bruised.
But whichever way one looks at it, one person who has been left standing tall, and proudly so, is Dandy Krazy. Yes, there are others such as Impi and Maiko Zulu, but none reaches the heights that Dandy Krazy has. His song, Donchi Kubeba, is simply stuff that revolutions are made of.
When the history of this country is written, make no mistake, Donchi Kubeba should be the ink with which that history, particularly that of the last 20 years, would have to be written with. Often times than not, the power of art in general and music in particular to exert influence on society has been cited, but not until the release of Donchi Kubeba has there been such a deep and clear demonstration of its impact on society.
Many years down the line, observers will look back at Dandy Krazys Donchi Kubeba and see the power of music. And whatever happens in future, Dandy Krazy must be in the hall of fame, if there is none currently existing, create one. And now!
The current crop of musicians has been derided in certain circles for doing mostly socially irrelevant songs except when they have to do with love, but Dandy Krazy has demonstrated that they can be socially, economically and politically-conscious if they want, with a song whose popularity defied age, race, gender and any demography that you can think of.
Dandy Krazy knows it, and that is the reason why they organised what they called the Patriotic Front victory party last Friday at Lusakas Fairview Hotel. Disappointingly, and for some unexplained reasons, the anticipated big crowd was simply not there. A shame really, considering the role the songs played not just in the build-up to the elections but in the aftermath as well. No celebration was complete without the song.
Still, a number of musicians converged at the Fairview grounds for another hullah, hopefully not the last. The musicians included Danny Kaya, Indie K, Benjimfwile, Macky II, King David and Impi, another socially-conscious outfit, whose song Basakala Nyongo, although playing second-fiddle to Donchi Kubeba, was still huge in its impact as well. The song is likely to remain relevant for some time to come.
Although without any discernable political inclinations, Danny proved very relevant at Fairview Hotel, as usual playing perfectly with the Mo Fire band, which had backed him and Dandy Krazy. But in terms of zeal and energy, King David should get the plaudits, as the pint-sized musician made full use of both the stage and the expansive grounds for his act.

But for all the entertainment that they got from the musicians in the house, the man everyone was waiting for was Dandy Krazy, and when he came on stage, boy, did he not bring a different energy to the whole spectacle. As usual, he failed to resist the temptation to go into his invectives, saying this and that but finally delivering an admirable act. Talk about having a unique dance routine, and Dandy Krazy has it. But what he had most for the audience was the hit song Donchi Kubeba, and he left it until late to deliver it. The story has been told. [ZambiaDailyMail]

What political party he favors is neither here nor there, the song rocks. A truly Zambian product and Donchi Kubeba worked to revolutionise Zambia, its a worthy concept. Support your local artist, sooner than later they can conquer the world for us and one day we will proudly wear their labels. Its a Patriotic way of thinking, time all Zambians embraced it, patriotism for, to and of Zambia.

Why is it easy, & I’m just asking, why is it easy to insult, or lie in Bemba?. Just check the insults directed at one # gilbert above. They are all in Bemba. I can’t avoid the temptation of thinking that the guys who are insulting are also Bembas. I say so because, other than Bembas themselves, the only other guys who are so keen on speaking the Bemba language are those lost souls from the CB. Otherwise everybody else is comfortable with Nyanja. At least then nobody will think you are a thief or a Kaponya. Actually it seems you can do anything bad in Bemba language including swindling people, murder, etc.

Most importantly; he said “Nalikwata share yandi iyapa Zambia, nkafwilapo pantu ine patali”! You lot that may not know what he meant; I felt teh guy; because I have always been of that view. If we all can claim a bit of Zambia, if we all can feel a bit of Zambia, then surely we should be ready to sacrifice for it. Why allow a group of wicked chaps hiding in the name of “educated” to subject the rest so untold suffering when they are enjoying? Is Zambia for them only? I would honour the guy; great philosopher he is. Congradulations Dandy!!

  32. Lovey Dovey

    October 25, 2011 at 3:08 pm

Honda, for your information, Bemba is the only romantic language in Zambia. That is why even your tribesmen sing love songs in Bemba. Insult in your language if you want. In Bemba they are not insults but amalumbo. That is how you praise imfumu.

Iwe Giberto naiwe, you must be a foreigner to slum such a comment eish??? MMD had allowed a PI-cadre like William to hold ZMK143m cash pa lodge and hussle people who were innocent includ her Royal highness… so respect the will of PF afterall we are in the boat rocking pretty and ngati chakubaba go to Daddy Zemus aku uze bwino.
The song was key to PF victory ma man
so just go to sleep and stop insulting tumfweko
    “mutima kuipa bati”….!

    October 25, 2011 at 4:37 pm

@Honda. Its easy to insult in Bemba because thats the most popular language associated with civilisation/industrailisation int he zambian sense. truth of the matter is that go to the Northen Province or indeed Luapula, these inssults are not common, almost not heard of. but its these “town-mice” that have absorbed the bemba when infact not bemba themselves. I worked in the transport sector myself, and even operated some buses for my business, and shocking guys, tonga for that matter at Choma bus station and tooters play and even insult in bemba. Its like the “in-thing” for showing that one is civilised. So dont blame bembas, its just htat those that went to the mines adopted an easier media of communication and more less formed a “bemba” of their own with a culture that has now been associated with being Bemba…stealing and street hustling. Thats the story behind. However, for Gilbert, I think he’s acting like HH, he seems chocking with envy at Dandy. So even him, yes, chikala chakwe. This is the last insult in the easier to say tribe…though am not bemba

    October 25, 2011 at 5:34 pm

@muchend Good you are not bemba but i think a real bemba wouldnt be happy 2 hear people abuse your mother tongue. Why should someone feel safe to insult or hustle sam1? Whether it is in the nem of civilization or wat, respect to mum and dad, i dare cnt insult in any language unless i was born frm a tree. More over Nyanja is widely used but rarely used in insultious or otherwise. Let respect other people’s opinions and more to this FEAR GOD.

ITS A REVOLUTIONARY SONG AND IT WENT SO WELL TO MOST ZAMBIANS WHO WANTED CHANGE AND THEY GOT IT. THIS IS HOW POWERFUL ART CAN BE. REMEMBER THE REVOLUTIONARY SONGS OF BOB MARLY AND OTHER GREAT LEGENDS WHO INSTILED CHANGE IN PEOPLES MINDS THROUGH SONGS.

SO CHAPS LIKE GILBERT SHOULD FIRST THINK BEFORE POSTING RUBISH ON THE NET. ANYWAY HE BELONGS TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE GETTO AND WE UNDERSTAND HIS AGONY! LET HIM CONTINUE LEAKING HIS WOUNDS AND KNASHING HIS ROTTEN TEETH

  49. Adam Werrity

    October 25, 2011 at 10:10 pm

Yes its Guys Scott! Because of his poor Bemba, he couldn’t come up with a proper Bemba word hence the term “Don’t Kubeba”….

I wish the song was also translated into Tonga so that our friends from the Southern province would have been part and parcel of the change that we have experienced in Zambia. I personally thank the artist for composing the Donchi Kubeba songo. The only place in Zambia where people are not happy with the change is Southern Province, I wish the friends there would see what the entire country have seen and move together with us. Regional politics is dead because one cannot win presidency with one province, but one can be a president without the votes from one province.
