HAKAINDE Hichilema and the UPND are selfish and that is why they are still in opposition, says UK-based UPND party member Professor Clive Chirwa.
In a telephone interview from Chongqing in China, Prof Chirwa said the UPND and Hichilema had made a terrible mistake by not listening to his advice that they merge with Michael Sata and the PF ahead of the elections.
He said Hichilema refused to take up the vice-presidency of the PF-UPND pact because he deceived himself that he was more popular than Sata.
President Sata was elected in the September 20 elections after beating incumbent Rupiah Banda.
“I was extremely disappointed that Hichilema didn’t get my advice. In fact, I told him before the elections that he was not talking and doing the right thing when he refused to bring UPND together with PF. I told him that PF has popularity,” Prof Chirwa said. “I told Hichilema in his eyes in his office that, ‘no, Mr Sata is more popular. The figures which you have are completely wrong’. This was the selfishness of Mr Hichilema and the people who surrounded him. Those are the people who ruined the pact. He would have taken it on board but the people who were advising him completely misled him, thinking he was more popular than Mr Sata.”
He said he predicted that the PF and Sata would win.
“The week before the election, on the 15th of September, I wrote a letter to the PF leaders to say that ‘next week all the Zambians will be celebrating Mr Sata’s victory’ and it’s true when 20th came, he had victory, because I could see that,” Prof Chirwa said. “UPND made a terrible mistake by not listening to me and now what I was predicting has actually happened.”
He said some top members of the UPND opposed the pact with the PF because they were selfish and did not want to relinquish their responsibilities and powers to competent people.
He said now many senior members of the UPND were regretting after the PF victory.
“I have spoken to a few of them, who are within UPND and they have regretted their decisions. I have received nearly seven emails from the people within the UPND national management committee telling me that ‘Professor, you were right. Why didn’t we listen to you?” Prof Chirwa said. “I told them that, ‘you did not listen to me because you had different agenda. You were not for the nation. If you were for the nation you would have actually taken the offer which was put on the table by PF and everybody else’.”
He said selfishness had landed the UPND in enormous disaster.
“It has ended up in enormous disaster because it’s inconceivable for the UPND to be actually talking to MMD. The MMD government ruined the country and I was telling them UPND before that ‘these MMD people are corrupt. You cannot get in bed with them. It’s virtually impossible. You must change your tact and start moving away from them’,” Prof Chirwa said. “I even wrote a letter to the secretary general of UPND, of course I might not disclose the content of the letter, but I was so displeased.”
He observed that in the past the UPND was more progressive than the PF, but now the tables had been turned upside down.
Prof Chirwa said he supported President Sata’s agenda and his speech to Parliament.
“The speech in the Parliament was the speech which I could have written but I didn’t write, it was his Excellency Sata who wrote it. That speech gave everything that I wanted to move Zambia into the new century,” he said.
Prof Chirwa said President Sata’s speech gave Zambians opportunities for employment and change of the constitution to eradicate poverty.
He said President Sata’s agenda was progressive and urged Zambians to support his Presidency.
“The government of progressive thinking has come on board and the agenda they have put forward is progressive and I want to contribute to that agenda. So far, I am extremely pleased with the government. President Sata has chosen ministers who are adequate in their intellectuality to bring real change to the Zambian people,” Prof Chirwa said. “It’s extremely important that now Zambia moves forward in a real way, not all those things we were hearing from MMD with their corrupt tendencies. Time now is to say, ‘congratulations PF’.”
Prof Chirwa said he would come to Zambia in December to present lectures in Lusaka and Ndola about technology transfer and national development.
He said he wants to help the Sata-led government to achieve its goals.
“I will be putting real figures and opportunities for Zambians to build the industries, the infrastructure, the medical care and every single part of society so that everybody has a house, food, etc,” said Prof Chirwa.
“I will bring all the technology to Zambia to help Zambia develop. I will be looking forward to the government to help me in this to eradicate poverty.”

This should now finish off biggoted HH. Prof. Chirwa cared for the nation and advised UPND to be part of national development by accepting Vice presidency in line with the then popularity trends but our dear friend HH could only settle for full presidency. How delusional and moronic is that. Now that elections are over he has chosen to pact with mmd to once again try and to be president. Prof. Chirwa you have the nation at heart and will certainly support you in your lates exploits

Mr Professory, when were you last in Zambia? It appears you base on understanding of Zambian politics on what you read in the POST newspaper. My fear is that your opinion is warped because of your souce of information. My understanding is that you have been away for too long and you are too theoretical in your approach. You are better of in a leacture room that on the political platform. Popularity as a measure of correctness: An idea that correct decisions are based on popularty is wrong, otherwise, we could have a flood of Prof. Clive Chirwas. It is another to win election and the other to run a country. Administering a nation on populist ideas is costly. Mwanawasa did not rule with populist ideas and things worked well. What did UPND and HH take alone that they did not share with others that they are selfish? A calibre of a prof. to abuse the word selfish is unreasonable – could we say that the prof was being selfish to want to have lead MMD straight from UK?

HH is the only remaining non Bemba serious contender for plot one. This the reason that his been fouhgt. Chirwa thinks politics is about science of planes where arimetc calucultions are the norm. In politics, the main component is the human mind and it is never static. HH is worth the preisdency and not VP-ship. On principle he is right not to accept the maness of a bougesie scholar who si devoid of Zambia’s real life and challenges. Yes, the people of Western, Southern, Central. HH and his cohorts may bask so comfortably in the clouds of idealism and the wishful-thinking of their presumed popularity but realism and honesty will always prevail at the end of the day. HH, blinded by his idealism and wishful-thinking, could not accept the realistic and honesty advice of Prof. Clive and now he is having to pay handsomely for his stubbornness. The bembas say, “munshebwa aile namafi kubuko” [the 'I-know-it-all person went with a messed trousers to his in-laws]. I hope the young man is learning something from his mistakes.

Prof Chirwa had the opportunity to serve in any political party of his choice. He was MMD until Levy rejected him and told him to start as branch chairman. His ego led him to the opposition. He spoke with PF and UPND and he chose UPND. Why? We will never know. I can only speculate that the man was a plant by PF in UPND to bring UPND into subjugation under PF. It is the best thing since sliced bread that the PF/UPND pact failed. If it had gone ahead, that would have been the ned of UPND as a standalone political party. What would have stopped Mr Sata of arresting his vice president on trumped up charges concerning the sale of Luanshya mine? We would have had the Malawian situation in the country. It is not selfishness but national interest that led HH to reject the pact. There may be people in UPND like Chirwa himself who wanted portfolios in a coalition government, but that can never be in national interest. Let ONE party govern and THAT party will take all responsibility for failure and praise for success.

CRY TH BELOVED COUNTRY
Zambia still has a big problem ahead. Currently there’s not credible alternative to PF. UPND is still prostituting around. No party can win by simply taking advantage of any sickening party. That like a hyena following after an injured buffalo hoping to eat it once it is very weak. But once it recovers, the hyena will go hungry and start looking for another animal looking sick. At last it is the hyena itself which will die of hunger and get eaten by wild dogs which have no patience to wait.
UPND supporters need to analyse the situation, accept their mistakes and weaknesses and start building up from ground up and learn to be principled. Floating around wont take UNPD anywhere. TIME. New parties are coming up with fresh agendas and ideas. UPND risks being absorbed in the history of time. Mazoka worked hard. Removed the stigma of tribe from the party. But HH constantly basing his decisions on tribes is very detrimental to UPND. Ask this question: Why was Mazoka so acceptable to all people North, South, East and West? Because he discussed issues and and moved away from using divide and rule. He helped to Unite people and not divide them. he criticized people based on each individual merits and not which part of Zambia one comes from.
When Mazoka died, those who did not understand politics destroyed UPND in a short time. They gave it a bad name. Who was the first to cry tribe connotation in everything done in UPND? SAKWIBA SIKOTA. To-date SAKWIBA is still in political wilderness crying.
All Zambians and many independent southerners are wondering the direction on UPND.
Time will tell. It is now or never. UPND take the bull by its horn and speak the truth. I no some wont buy it but it is good the face reality than someone’s dream into oblivion.
Get up, Standup if UPND has to survive.

CRY TH BELOVED COUNTRY – Get up, Standup if UPND has to survive.

Currently UPND is still prostituting around. No party can win by simply taking advantage of another sickening party. It’s like a hyena following after an injured buffalo hoping to eat it once it is very weak. But with time it ‘d recover. The hyena will then go hungry and start looking for another animal looking sick. Eventually, the hyena itself will die of hunger and get eaten by wild dogs which have no patience to wait.
All UPND supporters need to analyze the situation, accept their mistakes and weaknesses and start building up from ground up. Floating around won’t take UNPD anywhere. TIME-TIME. New parties are coming up with fresh agendas and ideas. UPND risks being swallowed in the history of time if its strategy is not reassessed.
Mazoka worked hard. Removed the stigma of tribe from the party. The party attracted many people an d supporters became confident. Alas! here comes HH constantly basing his decisions on tribes, not aware it is very detrimental to UPND. PF was a long way behind UPND/Mazoka. PF got focused and preached unit and embraced all. Never talked about tribes. UPND/HH wanted shortcut, the went out with any party they thought they could swallow. Today, UPND has contracted HIV and we don’t know how it will heal itself. Ask this question: Why was Mazoka so acceptable to all people North, South, East and West? Because he discussed issues and and moved away from using divide and rule. He helped to Unite people and not divide them. He criticized people based on each individual merits and not which part of Zambia one comes from.He rubbed shoulders with those who helped him present issues not hatred.
When Mazoka died, those who did not understand politics destroyed UPND in a short time. They gave it a bad name. Who was the first to cry tribal connotation in everything done in UPND? SAKWIBA SIKOTA. To-date SAKWIBA is still in political wilderness crying.
All Zambians and many independent southerners are wondering the direction on UPND.
Time will tell. It is now or never.
All UPND supporters should swallow pride, take the bull by its horn and speak the truth. I know some wont buy it, but it is good to face reality than to follow someone’s dream into oblivion.
We all need credible opposition, but UPND is not positioning itself for that. Every sensible person knows when to speak or keep silent.
UPND should re-brand itself. Five years is very long so UPND should come back in a positive way, help PF build a frame work for development and then campaign to show people what they can do after the people have seen them in a positive light. Currently, UPND should openly join PF in fighting corruption, even champion it so that all corrupt practices are attended to. Work with PF to plan Infrastructure development for whole Zambia. Help workers and the poor. These are ways to make UPND come back. Fighting PF from first day in power is a fast lane to political archives.
I beg all UPND supporters to read this and think about it. If we all speak with one voice, then UPND will come back instead of sinking.
AMEN

HH’s problem is lack of strategic thinking and inflexibility. The future presidency of Zambia was proffered to him on a platinum plate. When he was offered the vice-presidency of PF/UNPD, he should have gratefully accepted the position keeping in mind that the possibility exists for him to assume the presidency later. If he was an astute leader he could have discerned that PF/Sata was more popular and presented the real change that people really wanted.
He still has the opportunity to reorganise and set a different agenda that’s bereft of tribe, selfishness, arrogancy and bu mano ku ikwatila. Politics is a different ball game altogether especially if your opponents are the likes of Sata, experienced in the art of dribbling, HH doesn’t stand a rats ass of winning any election while Sata is in charge. Impossible!
