Some teachers in Luapula have passed a vote of no confidence in their provincial labour leaders for allegedly failing to represent them.
Teachers from the Secondary Teachers Union of Zambia (SESTUZ), Basic Teachers Union of Zambia (BETUZ) and Zambia National Union of Teachers (ZNUT) warned that they would pull out of the unions if their leaders do not resign.
The irate teachers who spoke on conditions of anonymity told tumfweko that they were tired of their leaders’ reluctance in addressing their grievances.
They noted that it was surprising that most teachers were not receiving allowances they were entitled to yet the leaders were not talking about it.
The teachers said the leaders had outlived their usefulness hence the need to retire them to pave way for new leaders as most of them are recycled.
They also expressed ignorance on how the same leaders are elected into offices adding that there was no transparency in the manner elections were conducted.
The teachers expressed disappointment at their leaders’ acceptance to rate most districts in the province as urban thereby denying teachers rural hardship and remote allowances.
The visibly annoyed teachers also noted that they did not know their leaders as they were not visiting districts to meet member teachers.
Meanwhile, the teachers have vowed not to accept salaula t-shirts they are being given during international teachers day celebrations.
The teachers said what they were contributing was more than enough to be given a low quality t- shirt adding that they felt insulted.

ATI SHANI? 19 Schools in kawambwa have not been given rural hardship.
OK. GUYS! KING COBRA IS IN ACTION!
How can kazembe which is about 40 km from the DEBS office be categorized under urban area and be denied the rural hardship allowances? and a school 10 km from the DEBS office be given rural hardship because it is considered to be in a rural area.
BANE KANSHI UKUSAMBILILA KULI KWISA APA?
Just give those teachers their money.

the government should interven quickly in these matters.
EVEN THE WAY TEACHERS ARE PROMOTED AWE BWAFYA.
Iam not a teacher but a friend of mine told me that she is promoted as a siniour teacher after serving for 3 year. yet at the same school where she is stationed there teachers with diplomas and served for many years have not been promoted. what criteria?
girls frinds? bootleakers? amafisakanwa? tribalism?

if a teacher in kawambwa is not paid rural hardship allowance, then who the hell gets that allowance, we might as well abolish it, because its clearly not performing its role in balancing the livelihoods of rural teachers. When Zambians refuse to go to villages we start blaming them. You see there is no difference between a Zambian in Lusaka and one in Lundazi, if they are qualified to work they should be equity in terms of attention they get from govt and the unions.
The sad thing about unions in Zambia is that they are now a launch pad for political careers, they are like political parties at some level and if you are in the union you can end up in politics, its like people use the union to mobilize political momentum. I think we should stop getting people form the unions.

Yes, in january 2009 Lilian Kapulu said they were working on it, again April Siliya addressed teachers in kazembe this year that everything was being done but up to now nothing. GRZ is owing teacher alot and when one talks about it he is intimidated and posted in yet another remote area. Prov. leader are their to just frastrate the interests of teachers. imagine the teacher contribute over k30 000000 from kawambwa but only k400000 is send monthly and is not done always. how do we run programmes at de groot.

the best thing teachers in kawambwa(contraversial kazembe) can do is to go on a strike. maybe the govt will pay attention to their grivances.

Sorry Teachers about that issue of settling and hardship allowances which are not being given in Kawambwa and other rural areas of Zambia.I do agree with other people’s comments. Why do we even encourage the election of the same people as leaders or union leaders at the expence of the teachers. To tell the trueth i have never joined any union in my working career.Reason, why should they deduct from my salary and the same money is being used as allowances for the same leaders to go and hold workshops of no substance to talk about.Sending their children to school using my money for fuel, school fees, maintenance of their vehcles and cell phone allowance. You teachers wakeup. That is not a platform for them to become politicians at your expence. Why should i be contributing to my fellow human being to move forward in life and me am remaining behind.Do not be forced to join this unions. He will be in the Office as long as he wants without contributing anything to welfare of the teachers.Do not let them steal your money in broad daylight. We have to contribute positive to ZRA not this unions.
I feel sad at times.

the unaudited amounts that are paid to union reps are too high. who determines how much should be paid and for what use? it breaks my heart to see how unoinised workers are robbed. do you really need unions. am told unionised miners pay over 100pin pay month and i estimate there are more than 20 000 miners. if you calculate how much they pay per year, the amount comes to k24 billion! believe me these guys are too rich to attend to your needs!

There are alot of unqualified teachers out there especially those who were employed by the Dora Siliya time.I know alot of them and am giving the Ministry a month as well as the concerned teacher to resign on moral grounds. No wonder your teachers union cant tick.
Its a shame! college failures teaching our children while those with qualifications are still unemployed. I hope batumfweko can dig deeper.

Kawambwa teachers u are the only ones facing those challenges I am a high school teacher in an urban area nd I don’t get paid graduate allowance with so many other teachers there is just so much shit in the ministry of education which needs to be cleaned. Higher officials get our money nd they is nothing we can do about but just to change careers like I am doing
